I hate this mentality, man. I wish America was less of a grind. We are taught to waste our lives busting our ass for some corporation that doesnt give a sh!t about us. Managers make moves like this to get ahead and I get it, but its just depressing. I wish unions were more powerful and less crazy.

Yeah, I do not manage my people like that.  If they have earned the time off then they get that time off. It is my job to build the team to accommodate leave as part of the staffing plan.

I need people to have quality time away from the job, they are happier and more productive people.  When people leave an organization more often than not it is due to dissatisfaction with how well they are managed. The loss of their institutional knowledge is bloody expensive to replace.

I was on a project at my company once that allowed us to do 4 day work weeks. 10 hours a day and we got to choose either Friday or Monday off as long as it was balanced off between the team. I chose Mondays. This is when I learned that having Mondays off was so much better than Fridays. It was glorious because even when we worked 5 days a week it often spills into 9-10 hours a day if not more.

It was a temporary life changer. I wish that was the way it was now.

I really feel like companies, specifically HR, should a do a better job of rewarding employees and distributing merit increases.

Both companies I worked for in the last 15 years gave around 3% raises across the board. If you were a "high performer", you would get 5%. Then there is a quota on how many high performers a manager can have. It all ends up feeling like performance doesn't really matter. Hell, negotiating starting salary matters a whole lot more than your actual performance.

Same

The people who have left my team left for a promotion which I fully supported and helped them get. I supported their decision and want my people to further their career.

Others have been with me for years. They are happy where they are at. I make sure my team can backup each other and have a liberal leave policy. Don't call me up with a fake cough or sh1tty excuse. Just tell me the leave you want.

I'm project focused not time focused.
