When they fly helicopters and pick-em up trucks, it is hardly a western.

I love old black and white shows and movies... and particularly old westerns, but to be honest all those shows suck. Gunsmoke was a million times better on the old timey radio show. The Rifleman.... a man, a rifle, and a boy.... ugh.

This thread should include western movies. And the Mount Rushmore includes:

The Wild Bunch - ('69) William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin... it was so unbelievably bloody it almost didn't get released. And there's boobs!  Mexican boobs. Apparently, in the 60's you could film brown boobs. Just not white one's. Hell of a story to boot. Greatest movie nobody today has seen.

Once Upon A Time in the West - ('68) Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, and the stunningly beautiful Claudia Cardinale. I'm not much a Bronson fan, but this movie is a Sergio Leone (director) classic. Intense, lots of death, and was considered a game changer as far as film making goes for the time. Beautiful wide-shots of the landscape which had never been done before. Also did I mention Claudia Cardinale? I've seen pretty girls in crappy westerns before, but I couldn't believe how stunning Claudia was. Good actress too.

I could round out the list a few everyone knows... Butch Cassidy & Sundance, True Grit, Good/bad, etc. but I'll throw out a bone for those who haven't seen...

Hombre - ('67) Paul Newman and Richard Boone (from Have Gun Will Travel). Newman is his classic self portraying realism that was rare in that era of film making. Boone was born to play westerns. Kind of ugly and beat up looking, the way you'd expect people in the west to look. Great flick.

What about cowboys versus aliens?

That was based on a true story.
