If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

- James 4:17

******

When I was younger, this was James 4:16, but the NIV version of the Bible has undergone some revisions over time, etc, etc.

This was a very impactful verse in my youth because it encapsulated the idea of "agency" in one's actions. You are defined by your actions, no more, no less. Your hands "speak the only truth that matters"

The lesson I learned from the verse was to understand the need for accountability. Also that excuses in form are not the same as excuses to one's conscience. You'll see people use excuses in form all the time. They ride on some word play or technicality to try to avoid accountability for their behavior. But it robs critical and valuable context like intent, integrity and understanding that social limits are designed to protect not just other people from you, but also you from yourself.

For those that don't believe in God, my answer to that is you can always still believe in the power of faith. You can have faith without religion. Over time, I've observed that faith is the necessary ingredient to live with grace, and a life without some form of purpose, faith and grace is a path to endless suffering.  We have a duty to ourselves, and even moreso for our children, to live purposefully, gracefully and faithfully.

Dang, you must be old as dirt; the book of James has been in its current state for over 1600 years now!

Personal responsibility is a very paradoxical concept in Christianity.  On the one hand we seem to be held responsible and judged on the basis of our actions, and yet we are told that we don't have free will, and that God has predetermined all the actions for which we will be judged.  There's a whole passage in Romans 9 to address this apparent contradiction:

And not only that, but this too: Rebecca conceived [two sons under exactly the same circumstances] by our forefather Isaac, and the children were yet unborn and had so far done nothing either good or evil. Even so, in order further to carry out God's purpose of selection (election, choice), which depends not on works or what men can do, but on Him Who calls [them], it was said to her that the elder [son] should serve the younger [son]. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated (held in relative disregard in comparison with My feeling for Jacob).

What shall we conclude then? Is there injustice upon God's part? Certainly not! For He says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will have compassion (pity) on whom I will have compassion. So then [God's gift] is not a question of human will and human effort, but of God's mercy. [It depends not on one's own willingness nor on his strenuous exertion as in running a race, but on God's having mercy on him.] For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, I have raised you up for this very purpose of displaying My power in [dealing with] you, so that My name may be proclaimed the whole world over. So then He has mercy on whomever He wills (chooses) and He hardens (makes stubborn and unyielding the heart of) whomever He wills.

You will say to me, Why then does He still find fault and blame us [for sinning]? For who can resist and withstand His will? But who are you, a mere man, to criticize and contradict and answer back to God? Will what is formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus? Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same mass (lump) one vessel for beauty and distinction and honorable use, and another for menial or ignoble and dishonorable use?  --Romans 9:10-21
