Cleveland Browns are relocating again

Team Owner / scam artist Jimmy Haslam demands a domed stadium.  They seemed to have a deal in place for a $1 billion renovation of the venue but now Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb says he won't use public finds for it.  Haslam won't pay for that renovation.  Lease is up in 2028.  There is something called the Art Modell Law that prevents a sports team from leaving but its not ironclad and if the city doesnt help pay for anything, they could work out a deal to allow the Browns to leave.  If the city wont spend on the team, itll be hard to keep them there.

If this actually happens, you'd have (3) NFL franchise that were born in Cleveland and moved:  The Rams, the Ravens (I know they consider the Ravens the expansion team with a new history but they took all the players), and Browns 2.0.  You'd also have the Bengals which were born when Art Modell fired Paul Brown.

The Art Modell Law is a thing, it’s a real thing that is also known as Ohio Revised Code 9.67. This code states, rather clearly, that any team that receives tax-supported assistance from a city or state can only leave the city and or state they reside in with express consent from the city and or state that houses them.

So unless the city of Cleveland stops paying any form of assistance to the team, they have the legal right to purchase the Browns from the Haslams, should the Haslams decide they’re done in the city.

If Haslam tries to move the team, the city of Cleveland has more than enough of a case to sue the Haslams for control of the team. That is if the city of Cleveland even wants the Browns anymore. There exists, albeit a small chance, that the city of Cleveland just doesn’t want to spend money on the Browns. In that case, the team can be moved with no legal issues.

The city of Cleveland should not give in. We should not be using local taxpayer dollars to fund the stadiums. The owners should pay for them.

the problem is if they dont spend taxpayer dollars to repair the stadium, then the city will be forced to either use taxpayer dollars to BUY the team or work out a deal to let haslam move them.

Pretty much what Seattle did with the Sonics. Asshat Starbucks guy sold them to the Oklahoma guys in a fit and then team is gonzo. 

Tough one here. Ideally they come to a deal and keep team in town.

never will happen.  they will just move the team to a place that will build a venue.  or if all places refuse to pay for it, they will move to a city that offers the best ancillary revenue like corporate sponsorship and cleveland will still lose out. I mean St. Louis was offering like $400mm in public funds to help build the Rams a new park.  If its a choice between that and zilch from Cleveland, its the St. Louis Browns (also the former name of the baseball club!)

Team owners are greedy SOB’s. I went to 2nd last home game of the old Browns and saw tons of F*** Art Modell signs. Fans that day didn’t care about the game, just wanted to express their anger. The team started the season as a Super Bowl contender, but they totally gave up when Modell announced he was moving the team.

There can be some negotiation. A sports team is good for the town. it shouldn’t be an all or nothing thing.
