Norman Lear was responsible for a lot;  He was the first guy to truly understand that TV wasn't just for selling soap. 

He understood that a box that is in virtually every home that everyone watches virtually every night has incredible potential for messaging and social engineering. 

 

Norman Lear did an episode on Terrorism that was decades ahead of its time. Still stays with me to this day.  I don't know if it was deliberate or not, buy Nick or MEtv of whatever replayed that episode in the days following 9/11.  It's message was prescient an powerful.
