I want to home school my kid. I realized during the pandemic that he is at school for 8 hours a day because I work 8 hours a day. We could get ALL of his daily work done in 3 hours. Then he could move on to learning what he really wants to do which is to create games.

Sure.  I don't know what percentage of schools are doing that, but, sure.

Home learners typically achieve test scores 15 to 25 percentile points higher than public school students on standardized academic achievement tests.

 

Those in the education complex (in this case, Oregon state university) state that........

Public school kids have more opportunity to have social interaction than homeschool kids. On top of that, kids love routine, and while homeschool could have that, it puts a ton of pressure on the parents who are teaching their kids. Public school is also cheaper than homeschool.

My sister & brother-in-law homeschooled all 4 of their daughters while they both worked. She was a Spanish teacher at the local high school, & he was a technician at a manufacturing facility. In spite of both of them working, they had time to do it is because they didn't have to spend a lot of time on something Paul Simon once referred to in song.

They all turned out fine. All married with children. 2 have jobs (part-time) & the other 2 are stay at home moms, but have previous work experience that would allow them to get jobs after the kids are grown. They traveled a lot (Asia-Europe) when they were younger & have a large network of friends both locally, and throughout the country/world.

Home schooling has been a pretty small percentage of education though.  It was usually pretty specific types of family that preferred home school.  Now that number is growing and different types of families are choosing to home school, probably some that have no business doing it.  With a larger percentage of families doing it I would think the testing will change.

Like I said, it will be interesting.  Doesn't mean I think it will be a bad thing.

Being baptized doesn’t wash away your sins, the Blood of Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior can.  Only way.  No baby should ever be baptized, they don’t understand what it means.  Shame on your parents.

I have some reservations. I think there is an element of socialization that occurs in the "group setting" that transpires in school that provides for important development which delivers later in life as networking becomes more important.

I think home schooling can be effective in improving academic performance, but at what cost?

That's what I think will be interesting.  I know there can be benefits but there can be disadvantages as well.  I also wonder how the quality of education will be.

I know people who home school, their kids are smart and ahead of their peers without a doubt.  Parents have the luxury of delivering one-on-one instruction, which is already a big win....they also have the advantage of knowing how and where to push because they know their kids so well.   It is HIGHLY effective.  Later, as the disparity in performance grows even wider, there will be increased claims of racism....of course....

I know it's worked well in the past.  I'm more curious what it will be like with an influx of more families doing it.  There will most likely be an increase in people home schooling that have no business doing it.

The homeschool families I'm familiar with in these parts are organized much like faith-based schools, and the students learn and do activities in groups.

They sure do miss out on a lot of stuff - like marching band, theater, choir, football, etc. - and get shielded from life stuff like bullying, peer pressure and that kind of thing, stuff that prepares them for being adults.
