Jac Caglianone has been promoted to triple a, and I bought tickets for next Tuesday night in Omaha to see his first return to Omaha since playing in the college WS last year (which my son happened to be at). It's about a 2 hr drive but should be fun.   I don't think I've been to a Royals game in kc yet and that's only an hour drive

I bought two second row tickets and parking right in front of what he'll be standing in the on deck circle for $55 after fees.  Too bad going to an mlb game can't be that reasonable

this is pretty darn cool.  Cameron played for St. Joseph Central HS, where my son is a senior on the baseball team and making occasional starts in the rotation.  A bunch of Noah's close friends and family are making the trip to Tampa to watch him in his big league debut.

I doubt it since they only play three games

Royals usually suck at hitting lousy pitchers and shell stud pitchers so we should fare well going against mize and skubal

Seth Lugo is scheduled to return from the injured list and start Friday so that's good news.   I'll say Royals 2-1.

I liked Caglianone and had hoped he fell to the Pirates.  He struggled in his first minor league romp, but meh, it was after a CWS run and playing with a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds that were a step down from what he was facing.  Dude lit it up in his short stint in spring training and continued on in AA and AAA.  I think that production can continue.  He's a legit "true hitter", that has a ton of power.  That's why I was hoping he fell to the Pirates.  He'd instantly make our lineup better.

That said, I'm loving the kid we got, Konnor Griffin.  At 19 (just turned 19 only 5 weeks ago), he's hitting over .310 in A-ball and with an OPS over .880.  In 41 games, he has 8 HR's and 20 SB.  MLB Pipeline thinks he'll be up in 2028 and scouts have made comments that he could be on a Mike Trout pace.  Trout was drafted in June of '09 and got to the pros in July of '11.  Griffin was drafted in July 2024, could be up in Pittsburgh in August of 2026 is the comp they're saying.  Now, this is the Pirates, so I don't think they're going to bring the kid up in August next year if they don't need him.  They'll slow play him (like they're doing with Chandler), and probably not bring him up until 2027.  Still, that's a year sooner than projected.

Heard last night, during the Pirates/Diamondbacks broadcast that Paul Skenes has an ERA of 2.012 (yes, .012... that 3rd decimal place matters), in games pitched as a 22 year old.  Dating back to 1915, only 1 pitcher has an ERA better, Babe Ruth at 2.011.

Not really.  The game is in KC.   In 57 road games, Skubal is 20-19 with a 4.07 ERA.  Last year was the only year where he had a road ERA under 4.  This year, in 5 starts, he's sitting at 3.38.  Not saying that 3.38 is bad, just that he's not the same guy that he is at home.  If the game was in Detroit, then I'd side with you that it would be "ballzy".

He's been mildly disappointing this year. Obviously still great, and it's early in the season but his WAR is down by 3.1, his K/9 is down 2.3, hard hit % is up as is fly ball % by about 4% over last season.

WAR is cumulative as the season goes on, so obviously it's down.

Imagine being 22 years (23 as of yesterday), and someone tells you that while you are still producing as one of the 10 best people in the world at your craft, that you're "mildly disappointing".

Imagine it being all relative and i'm comparing him to the other best people in his craft .... because what else would I be doing? 

 

 

I don't understand your comment on WAR. Yes, more time for a player to contribute can improve their WAR (as the season goes along) but WAR can go up and down, the same way K/9 or any other ratio can. WAR is not a true counting stat/metric.

Perhaps the words "mildly disappointing" were a stretch? Idk. I'm just looking at what he's done so far this year vs. what he did last year and what the expectations were. Facts are facts. His K/9 is down, hard hit rate is up and fly ball rate is up. He's not been as dominant. I still said he was great, and it's only the end of May... but that's also enough of a sample size to discuss. Which again, we are discussing major league baseball players. They are all the best at their craft.

My comment was more of a joke, hence the laughing emoji.  The dude is doing something so great, that based on his prior accomplishments, it's considered mildly disappointing.  Something like that is rather awesome to achieve and something we should all hope to be at, at some point in our lives.

With respect to my WAR comment, yes, WAR can go up or down, but you can't expect someone who had a great year over a period of 23 starts, to be near that number after only 12.  Right now, Skenes has the 2nd highest WAR (2.8), in the league (baseball-reference.com).  He's on pace to be at 5.37 for 23 starts.  Last year, he was a 5.8 for 23 starts... that's less than a .5 difference.  Luzardo is first at 2.9.  To note, Wheeler is 3rd at 2.3 and like Skenes, has had 12 starts.  Using Fangraphs, Skubal is #1 in WAR at 2.6, Luzard #2 at 2.4, and Skenes at 2.3.

I'm assuming he'll get enough time in RF to become eligible at both positions, but he and Vinnie can go 1B/ DH while Salvy is catching.

It's hard to imagine him getting enough time to work as a pitcher, but he's got upper 90s fastball velocity with a decent arsenal of secondary pitches.  He'd be a gem in Homers for me if he gets to play pitcher and bat in a few years.

Now let's go get that ROY so the Royals can get an early compensatory pick for calling someone up early in their career and winning the award like they did with BWJ
