So do anecdotes count or not?  You can't have it both ways.

Come on Jerry even you can't be dumb enough to think that Trump is going after Mahmoud in order to keep us safe.  He hasn't even committed a crime for fücks sake.

This is a clear revenge move and hes going after all college campuses and anyone that protests against the regimes policy.

One would hope not. It seems more disengenous than dumb.

The purpose of this is to discourage/chill protests on all college campuses, starting with immigrants who are here legally, and then probably moving next to immigrants who have become US citizens.

They don’t count if you’re trying to make a broader point. They count if you’re trying to disprove a broader point. Do you see the difference?

I was making an argument against the idea that we should exclude all Palestinians from emigrating to this country. It’s amazing to me that I should even have to refute such a notion, but in order to do so all I need to do is bring up an anecdote. If on the other hand I was trying to prove that all or most Palestinian immigrants to the USA are good people, one anecdote would not suffice.

Exactly.

I do struggle in determining if Jerry is just dumb or dishonest.  Maybe a combination of both.

Trump’s attempt to bypass due process to deport Venezuelans is similar to this effort - in both cases he is trying to go around the law and his supporters seem to be good with it. This is why I support the ACLU so that Trump will get slapped down in these attempts.

Wait..wut?

You can't use anecdotes to PROVE a broader point but you can use it to DISPROVE a broader point?  Huh?  You are out of your mind if you're using that pretzel logic.  You absolutely cannot do that.  Are you okay?  It just seems like you're just trying to cope with the truth so you're making stuff up now.

He’s certainly not dumb. I think he’s lying to himself. Like so many other conservatives he’s become invested in winning an overall struggle for our culture so he’s willing to overlook Trump breaking the rules.

Not if he's violating the terms of immigration law.  Sorry pal, but jerry is correct on this.

That’s because you want to exclude whole groups of people from coming to this country, and you don’t want to admit that such an attitude is inherently bigoted. So you need to dismiss any arguments to the contrary. I get it. But you’re wrong, Mark is wrong, anyone who holds this bigoted view is wrong, Since I don’t think you guys are really bigots, I’m confident that someday you’ll realize the flaws in your thinking. In the meantime the ACLU will keep slapping down your boss.

immigration and its affects always remain the same no matter how many or who you bring in. Right Tim? If it was good in the 1800’s then it must be just as good now.

Nope things change. Laws need to be modified.
But the core principles remain the same. We are a nation of immigrants, the shining city on the hill, the refuge of the hungry, the tired, the poor. If we ever lose that then we lose our national identity.

We pretty much stopped immigration after ww2 through 1965. The greatest period in American history. Somehow the lawns were mowed and the dishes were washed.

Or so we would hope, but with our present SCOTUS we can't be sure of that. The law that he is going after the Venezuelans with is the same one that was used to put US Japanese citizens in internment camps in during WW2 (and that decision was upheld at the timeby SCOTUS in the Koramatsu case).

That's because we were at war with Japan.

We're not at war with Venezuela.  Yet.

But even so Korematsu was a terrible decision. I don’t think it would get done today.

The internment of Japanese-Americans was mostly done by liberals and Democrats:  liberal members of the Supreme Court, FDR, Earl Warren. Many conservatives were opposed, including Herbert Hoover, J Edgar Hoover, Thomas Dewey, etc. The ACLU, supported mostly by conservatives back then, fought the good fight and lost.

This is a cautionary tale. Authoritarianism is not ideological. Liberals are just as prone to it as conservatives, perhaps more so since liberals tend to favor larger government.

You also keep claiming you aren't for open borders, but yet when it was obvious Biden not only open our borders completely even providing large incentives for illegals to come it, you endlessly kept lying about it and giving him cover.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump administration brushed aside decades of precedent when it ordered Columbia University to oust the leadership of an academic department, a demand seen as a direct attack on academic freedom and a warning of what’s to come for other colleges facing federal scrutiny.

Federal officials told the university it must immediately place its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Department under “academic receivership for a minimum of five years.” The demand was among several described as conditions for receiving federal funding, including $400 million already pulled over allegations of antisemitism.

Across academia, it was seen as a stunning intrusion.

It's not happening.

I am not for open borders. I am for generally open immigration. And I continue to dispute your main point: Biden was not the cause for the rush of people to our border,  nor will Trump be the cure. This is an ongoing issue with much deeper causes and remedies than we  are willing to address.

Only I haven't seen anyone here argue that a singular person can't be good who grew up there.  You're making the argument because one such person can exist, others exist (I agree), and that we should welcome larger numbers of them because of that.  Your goal line to cross for your argument to succeed is way shorter in your mind than where it should be.  The problem is that large numbers, I'd argue the vast majority of Palestinians, believe in things that are harmful to the United States and the West at large.  You cannot vet them to know who has managed to escape that mentality despite the upbringing in that environment.  So if you accept larger numbers of them, you are naturally going to get disproportionately larger numbers of people who are problems to our society at large.  Knowing one such exception to the rule does not make your argument valid.

The belief we should save our country and culture from that damage and possible destruction isn't racist or bigoted, it has nothing at all to do with skin color.  It has everything to do with our way of life and beliefs.  If we accept your friend is one of the exceptions, I'd have no problem with many like him living here.  But the problem is you can't tell me from a subset of 100 Palestinians who want to come here which are like him and which are not, who only wants to escape the poverty and strife they are in.  Yet they believe the West is evil, violence against those ideals is justified, and have had it ingrained in them since birth and will raise their children to believe the same.  I could see the argument if those elements were the minority of that population, but polling of beliefs and what we see unfolding in Europe shows us that isn't the case.  I'm not willing to drive our society off a cliff to feel better about ourselves that we weren't racist or bigots in the eyes of some because these people who wish us harm happen to be a different skin color or ethnicity.  I don't give anyone a pass for that because they happen to be a different skin color, your skin color, my skin color, whatever their skin color I don't want them here.

There is nothing to dispute.   It is all 100 percent exposed and known.  Trump in a month reduced border crossings from over 5,000 per day to 200.  I seriously have no idea what you think went on, but it is a fairytale of lies.
