First off thanks Posty for bringing to light there were 2 lead singers before Paul Dianno. (Reminds me of “Peter Best is not a Beatle”)

I was a huge fan and saw them many many times in early years. I remember cutting school the day Powerslave dropped. Remember the feeling of excitement as we went to a buddy’s house smoked weed and listened to PS over and over. 
 

However I was going to say that was last album by Maiden I bought but I did get Somewhere in Time. Checked out after that.

Unpopular opinion- I do not like live albums. I like going to concerts but not into live music in general.

There are not enough superlatives. Their first 7 albums (8 if you count Live After Death, which @Maximum Overkill is correct about) are the best 7 (8)-album run in metal (if not rock) history.

I've only seen them twice, both relatively recently. @MikeMatt, you focked up bad by stopping before 7th Son of a 7th Son came out. That might be their best. Their output since Bruce came back has been really impressive.

Interesting, maybe that's why I like them.  I was a musician back in the day, and always leaned towards musicality (dare I say, I was a music snob).  My friends who introduced me to Maiden also liked groups like Judas Priest, which is meh to me.  But I love(d) Maiden.

For Metallica, my favorite songs (One, Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, maybe a few more) were the more melodic songs as well.  

Oh well, that's why God made different music.

My mother is a musician who listens to classical music all day, and most of her friends are similar. When I was ~14, I was in a car with her and one of her (younger) friends and I made her stop at the local record shop so I could pick up Maiden's new album No Prayer for the Dying. Her friend blew me away by suggesting we listen to it in the car. She said she and many classical types loved Maiden exactly because of how symphonic their sound could be and how varied their song structures were. My mom vetoed the proposal, but I fell in love with Shannon a little bit that day (Shannon was probably about 25, slender (32B?), raven hair, piercing eyes and a great smile. Yum.)

Long story short, everyone should love Maiden and/or a woman like Shannon.

Foundational band for me. I have seen them 5 times. Powerslave tour, Somewhere on Tour, 2 times on 7th Son, and Legacy of the Beast a few years ago. As @Fnord said, their first 7 albums are brilliant. Killers is my favorite. I did check out in the 90's on their new stuff, however got back in with Brave New World.

Funny story if you do not know. - Nikko was on Eddie Trunk recently and believe it or not in retirement he is playing in an Iron Maiden cover band in Florida. Too funny.
