Illegal migrant truck driver in deadly Florida crash failed English, road sign tests got license in Liberal State

Commercial DL

AI overview... Does Usha Vance have a CDL?

Yes. Usha Vance has long enjoyed driving commercial vehicles. She typically drives the kids to school in a dumptruck, but occasionally will drive her Peterbilt sleeper cab. It was given to her in CA after ten rounds of "guess how many fingers I am holding up." If the instructor is holding up fingers non english speaking applicants are allowed to answer with a thumbs up signal instead of saying the number aloud.

If you can't read road signs...permanent or temporary (detour, construction, accident etc) YOU HAVE ZERO BUSINESS DRIVING AN 80,000LB VEHICLE. To even bring this up..safety vs production.....is completely asinine.

It’s common sense

Let me guess.  Your Indian truck driver friend that you play chess with in the park told you that.

I honestly had no idea, but thank you.

Are you suggesting illiterate Americans should be allowed to have standard DLs?

I’m only going to agree with you but that applies to Mayflower Americans too. I live in Louisiana, which might have the lowest literacy rate in the country & has a load of French speakers. I think coincidentally we also have the near highest accident rate & auto insurance rates. I mean, I’d be glad if there was a literacy test for everything, except voting, from drivers licenses to the presidency.

The ability to read & write English has been a DOT regulation for many many years. I'm not sure how people are getting around it...but yes ANYONE not satisfying those requirements shouldn't be driving.

Thanks, I agree. Wouldn’t the employer know this too, or the guy’s boss at least?

They should.....but let's not forget cheap labor often pushes doing the right thing to the side.

All the employer cares about is if you have the proper documentation.   States like CA are ignoring the laws/regs and issuing DL's they shouldn't but because of state reciprocation those DL's are valid nationwide.  Florida is suing CA for this practice.

I’m really trying to agree with Megla, I just don’t understand why he’s limiting it to CDLs.

Really? Did you forget the topic of the thread did you forget your response to this post by MO

The Indian immigrant truck driver accused of killing three people in a crash when he made an illegal U-turn across a Florida highway badly flunked English fluency and road sign tests following the smash-up, the US Department of Transportation revealed.

Harjinder Singh answered just two of 12 questions correctly when being tested for English language proficiency by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration after the April 12 crash.

And when asked to read highway signs and their meanings, Singh could only identify one out of four signs shown to him, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Tuesday.

Things are a little screwed up. I merely tried to agree with you & suggested it should apply to all licenses & all Americans (or others). I just think it’s odd to focus on this guy being an Indian or Indian-American when at least in my city in a red state there are loads of incompetent drivers many of whom I’d guess are certainly illiterate.

Then why say this in response to MO

"This could also describe the Second Lady & the Vice President’s in laws."

Doesn't seem to follow the logic you just posted, but again, you already knew this

Well it does IMO. I’m saying the man’s ethnicity has nothing to do with it. Also (forgive me for not checking) but is he an American?

If only there was a way to look things up if a person is ignorant about them.  I think I'll invent something and put it on the Internet.   I think I'll call it "Fool gle".

It would help if the gentleman in the OP would provide a link with his post. But I don’t mind checking.

While you're at it look up the guy who barreled down I70 in Denver a couple years ago and killed a number of people.   While you and Tim play political games people are needlessly dying.

So Singh was here on a work permit, so he was legal but not a citizen.

It is truly sad what you mention in Denver. I have a family friend whose daughter knew 4 college aged girls killed on US 90 a couple years ago. Tragic, awful stuff.

Tragic, awful stuff happens.   And we can't always prevent that.  But THIS is preventable.  But keep looking for ways to justify these incompetent people driving on licenses that don't meet the regs.  That's what people like you and Tim do.

Eh like I said if someone can’t pass a driving test because they can’t read then they should fail the test & be denied a DL of any kind. I’m thinking this probably happens.

Did his inability to read actually cause the wreck?

He attempted a U-turn from the right lane on the Florida turnpike using a cut through for emergency vehicles in moving traffic. He had to be full blown retarded to attempt it . Showed zero remorse after on the side of the road. I don’t think you grasp what this guy did

I actually agree with everything you just said, & all of that is 100% retarded, wrong, criminally negligent in Lahore, Goa & Calcutta, & every other place in the world, & has absolute nothing to do with his inability to read.

His inability to read should have prevented him from getting a license.  If he doesn't have a license he isn't driving the truck and therefore doesn't attempt a boneheaded move.  And the result is no accident and Americans aren't dead.  Do you not understand chain of events and WHY we have laws and regulations?  Never mind.  I'm out too

This is why CDL's should be a federal license....it's already governed by the feds.....they shouldn't be issued or managed by the state.

I do, but again this would affect many Americans too & it didn’t directly cause the accident. It’s not butterfly effect stuff but it’s somewhere in between.

How did it not directly cause the accident? It was an illegal u-turn.

"For official or emergency vehicles only" is what the sign said.

So yes. You need to be able to read that the little turnaround isnt for you to use. If he could read that, he wouldnt have tried to use the turnaround in the median.

But regardless, how is a CDL driver that cant speak or read english supposed to verify his cargo? What if the load has 5 pallets of hazmat and he isnt authorized to haul hazmat?

What if he is hauling ORMd packaging and he gets in an accident and those cans get ruptured? What will he tell the spill crew?
