Horseman 2,632 Posted Tuesday at 03:55 PM It's throwing money away, but, when it's north of 600M it's also +EV so I'll pick up a ticket when I remember to. And I really only want to win the 5 white balls. Hundreds of millions has a tendency to ruin people.
WhiteWonder 2,846 Posted Tuesday at 05:00 PM I never understood the people claiming "it's a tax on the poor" "waste of $" etc. If you can't afford a $2 lottery ticket ... also sort of feels like the same people with that mentality also have some vice they spend money on like smoking, gambling, impulse shopping and so on. I don't play the lottery all the time, pretty much just if im filling up and happen to remember. I also don't care what the jackpot amount it. The smallest jackpot is life changing money even after taxes. The silly thing is how much you really get compared to the "jackpot"

I assume bigger jackpots but I thought hitting 5 without the powerball was always one milly. That sucks though but again, he still got life changing money. Even just the 5 numbers if it paid out 1 million pre tax is life changing. You invest that properly going forward and you shave many years off your target retirement date. Which is why I'm not one of those who only plays when the jackpot reaches a certain threshold. Your odds are extremely bad no matter what, so I don't really care if the "value" of playing becomes very marginally better. It's kind of gross though to see the advertised 1.3 billion or whatever it was last night or maybe thats the estimated for the next drawing and then see the estimated cash option is like 585 million. Then pay income tax on the lump sum . Would I complain about, lets say $350 million after taxes? no. But then you realize the government got a nice 950 million. I really do not recall if it was 500 or 250 but after taxes it really wasn’t life changing $$. Was like upgrade 2 cars and vacation and couple bucks in the bank. It's my understanding that the advertised jackpot is the estimated annuity amount paid out over 30 years. Not the number of dollars they currently have, that would be the lump sum. States take a rake of 20-30% The fed (and some states) collects taxes.
Horseman 2,632 Posted Tuesday at 07:59 PM Knowing that, I'd always take the lump sum. I can invest it better than some jergoff in a chit annuity.
thegeneral 3,351 Posted Tuesday at 08:20 PM Playing the powerball isn’t about winning it…it’s about the few minutes you plan what you’d do with it. Let’s say 500 million or whatever after the taxes and fees. 200 million goes into something the wife and I can’t touch no matter what we say for next 5 years or so . 100 million into our day to day account. 50 million into hooking up family and friends. Would take awhile figuring out how that is done. Probably while drinking some fine vino in the South Pacific or Northern Italy. 50 million into housing fund. Dropping prolly 15 or so on our main spot. Sprinkling in some vacay homes. Still got 100 to play with here! Thats worth a couple bucks in mental entertainment! Going to have to re-evaluate those numbers. Even a 1.3 billion jackpot doesn’t even get you close to 500 million clear. Forget that 100 million to “play with”
