Vodka Martini. Extra Dry. Olive stuffed with blue cheese. Do it.

I like vodka, but not in a martini. Blue cheese olives might be good tho.

Who cares? Some good gin, dry vermouth, and a couple toothpicks full of garlic and jalapeno stuffed olives make you immune to name calling and shame. So good.

I've moved gin martinis into my rotation with old fashioneds.  I use lemon-stuffed olives at home, and splash a little of the lemony olive juice into the shaker (technically, I stir because shaking is for knuckledraggers), and add a lemon rind.  So I basically get both the olive and the lemon twist goodness, which is good for me because I hate making decisions.  :D

Cosmos for all you fags. On me!

For the OP, around the late 90s I was out at a bar with some work folks and they had a drink none of us had heard of called a cosmo.  I asked what was in it and thought, hmm, that sounds tasty, I'll try it.  When it came out pink, the guys in the group gave me all kinds of shiot.  The chicks though were all over me to taste it and chat me up about it.  It wasn't quite as good as a puppy for a chick magnet, but had I been single, I maybe could have parlayed that pink drink into some other pink.

Please explain this. I had a friend try to convince me once that shaking "bruises" the booze or somesuch. I disregarded him because he was a poser into all things trendy. I shake the hell out of the mix with ice before pouring into a glass sans ice. Help out a knuckledragger!

Shake cocktails containing citrus, cream, milk, or egg for better emulsification and aeration, creating a frothy texture.

Stir cocktails made only with spirits and liqueurs, like Manhattans and Martinis, to maintain their clarity, keep the delicate flavors intact, and avoid over-dilution.

Should I also drink it from a tall rainbow flute and hold my pinky finger up while lisping my drink order?

I don't drink cocktails that need an emulsifier. And I fail to see how shaking will somehow affect flavor. Incorrect dilution is not a concern. Please explain further while I make fun of your responses (but not you, I get you're just trying to answer a question)

an emulsion changes the chemical compound (you likely know this). i'll drink margaritas/daiquiris blended and rocks (no umbrella) on vacation and at home in the summer

Stirring offers more control over dilution/chilling/integrity of flavors

Edit: i also have whisky rocks for when i want zero dilution (chill with no extra water)

Ok but I still don't understand how shaking somehow alters the flavor while stirring doesn't.

Never stir a martini. Always shake the fock out of them if they are straight gin or vodka. Throw in some blue cheese olives and everyone is happy. Proven.

My initial answer was going to be "I dunno, I'm just a poseur like your buddy," but thankfully Bier rescued me.  :D

I don't exactly know the answer because I'm not a chemist, but a few thoughts.

One, I don't think that stirring DOESN'T alter the flavor, but moreso that it alters it less than shaking.

Two, liquors like gin have a lot of aromatic botanicals infused in it (juniper of course, but generally several/many others).  Perhaps shaking agitates the liquid such that it releases more of these aromas into the air vs. stirring, thus altering the taste?

Three, it is known in poseur circles that a single drop of water in whiskey alters the taste.  I believe it releases some flavor chemicals that are previously bound within the liquid, and is thus considered a generally good thing.  It was common in Scotland, for instance, to be given a dropper and glass of water to accompany your Scotch.  But perhaps too much is a bad thing?

In the end, perhaps the dilution is the biggest thing.  Sunday night I had a martini at the airport before my flight.  Bartender shook the fock out of it, and I ended up with a diluted drink with little flecks of ice in it.  Not nearly as good as when I stir my own at home.

  • Thanks 1
