I read a report that said dislocated knee.   though given what I saw I'd be seriously surprised if that was all it was

That’s what it looked like.  It had to be that, or tibia fracture at the joint, and that’s highly unlikely based on his lack of pain.  Dislocated knee is what  Chubb had.  And that means every ligament is likely torn.
