How do you run your playoffs seeds/looking for some advice

Recommended Posts

For years, we had 3 divisions, and 7 teams made the playoffs.  Twelve teams are in the league.  Only the 1 seed gets a bye. The issue my league is having,  one of the division winners usually has a crappy team and gets the 3 seed because of the division title while usually the 4 or 5 seed usually has the better overall record. The 3 seed always seems to get the advantage.

Just asking for advice,  do any of you do anything different in your leagues to prevent this or chait up. When I brought up the issue the commissioner said then get rid of the divisions if we dont want this to happen. I think thats silly but just asking around.

I play in a 16 team $ league who has a good seeding system IMO.

4 divisions of 4 teams, division winners automatically qualify, and the 4 wildcards are based on points scored.  Seeding 1-8 for the playoffs depends totally on season scoring.  We had a division winner this year who won a bunch of close/low scoring games and he was the 8 seed.

It sounds like the OP's league is the way the NFL does - division winners are the higher seeds followed by the best records of the non-division winning teams. That's why the Steelers are a 4-seed today with their 9-7 record while the Houston, LAC, and Buffalo are still lower seeds at 5, 6, and 7 with 11 wins each.

With divisions, the goal is to win your division. For that, you are rewarded with a higher seed. Don't win your division? You better have a good record!

I see no problem with that. If everyone knew that going in, then they shouldn't have a problem with it either.

In a divisional setup, with your division.

12 teams head to head

3 division winners

seeds 1 & 2 get a bye

seeds 4-6 based on points

Our stupid problem is going to week 18 which I hate but the league votes for this every year

Oh yeah! That is bad!

I'm actually thinking of going to a Week 16 championship. Tired of the championship during Christmas Week. Especially with the 3 games on Christmas, 2 on Saturday, then Sunday and Monday. Just so disjointed. Plus, more and more teams are just shutting it down.

The huge negative to that...the NFL's instance on week 14 bye weeks! Despite no need for that. Instead of just 2 teams on bye THREE TIMES, the NFL could easily not have byes in week 14. They could easily have 4 teams a week on a bye weeks 5 through 12, but they don't.

Not only is it unfair to those 4 teams (to have a bye so late), it screws with FF schedules.

If you have divisions, that’s how it should be done.

7 playoff teams in a 12 team league feels like a lot though

Exactly what I was thinking too - this mirrors the NFL and it's why the 7-9 Seahawks hosted the 11-5 Saints in 2010 and the 7-9 Washington team hosted the 11-5 Bucs in 2020.
