Geek Gamers - Need input for Christmas purchase

So, I never got into gaming. Probably born about 10 years too early to get into it. I don't really know anything about gaming stuff.

 

But I'm looking to buy a console for my son. So, should I be getting a Play station or XBox. I have been told by a couple of people that Play station is the way to go. So, I'm leaning that way.

 

If so, what else should I be looking for when I buy it. How much should I be spending (not including the games which I can get other people to buy for the kid)? What accessories should I get? I don't need the top of line stuff but I don't want to have anything that will be obsolete in 6 months.

 

I ask for advice because I don't know what the $100 difference between something like these two packages. Not sure if the $100 is worth it not:

I think a lot of people specifically the generation that first started playing videos games swear by the PlayStation because they started playing on the PS1. To me Xbox is far superior and has much better online play. The Xbox one controller is also much better than the PS controller. I swear they design them for little asian hands.

PUBG just came out on the 12th it is pretty sweet. I don't see how anyone couldn't like it.

Size of storage is probably the biggest thing.

More and more games are going to download so kind of depends on how many games he's going to download as opposed to purchase the physical game. You're probably fine getting the smaller one with Battlefront.

The PRO supports 4k and has a slightly better CPU. No other difference. Get the cheaper one, if you don't have a 4k TV.

He is 12. He is autistic but he is high functioning and plays games on his ipad and has played games at arcades. So, figure he is in the 8-12 year old range.

What does his friends have. If his friends have an Xbox then you get him an Xbox, if they have a PS4 then you go PS4.

 

I agree with 90's, Xbox is better in a vacuum, but my brother's have PS4, so I have a PS4.

Ok thats plenty old enough. He should be telling YOU which system and games he wants or likes really. I have always been a PlayStation fan personally, so Id get the ps4 pro. As for games, its really personal preference. 90s mentioned PUBG but if you dont play or like shooters then obviously you wont like it. Its so much easier if the kid can tell you what he wants to play.

This only matters if he plans to play online.

 

A second controller might be a good idea as well, so he can play with you or with friends when he has company.

 

Also, it's kinda late now but they have been running some pretty killer deals on XBOX One S with a game for like 200 bucks on Slickdeals.

He can communicate fine but he probably doesn't know what he wants. He doesn't do any gaming at friends houses (he doesn't have a lot of friends). He has one friend who is a couple of years older than him who is also similar high functioning autistic as him. He is into gaming. I just sent an email to the mom of his friend (Chinese - A cups) to see what system they have and if there are any games that his friend particularly enjoys.

Find out what system his buddies have (hint: it's an Xbox). Buy him a Xbox One S, you can find them for $170 right now.

 

He'll be hitting you up next year for the Xbox One X, it will be cheaper by then. Make him wait 2 years for that one.
