Bills Fire the Ryan's

Recommended Posts

Both Rex Ryan and Rob Ryan have been let go by the Bills...

ESPN

The Buffalo Bills fired coach Rex Ryan on Tuesday after almost two seasons with the team.

Ryan's firing comes after the Bills lost 34-31 in overtime Saturday to the Miami Dolphins to eliminate Buffalo from postseason contention for a 17th consecutive season.

"I spoke with Rex earlier today and we mutually agreed that the time to part ways is now," Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. "These decisions are never easy. I want to take this opportunity to thank Rex for all his efforts and wish him all the best moving forward. Kim and I and our entire Bills organization share in the same disappointment and frustration as our fans, but we remain committed to our goal of bringing a championship to Western New York."

Huh. I guess that was a 'statement' firing - or there was some sort of apprehension about Rex traveling to the Jets for the last game?

Either way, odd timing with one game left on the season.

Rex screwed himself by hiring his brother. It was a Rexy thing to do. Also, Rob is pretty clearly terrible. He adds at least 100 yards to your opponents' offenses every week.

Now Rex is either gonna be talking loudly on tv or being a dc somewhere.

It's to keep OC Anthony Lynn as head coach, who many teams were/are reported-allegedly want to interview.

Does the extra week really matter for that? I don't know.

Rex could also have asked to be let go a week early so he can feel out other opportunities the minute next Monday's firings happen.

What makes no sense is starting EJ Manuel over Cardale Jones in week 17, unless there's something in one of their contracts that would trigger something. (doubt it)

The Bills having only 10-men on the field for Ajayi's 57-yard run for the game-clinching FG sealed Rex's fate.

BUF is likely showcasing EJ Manuel to try and get SOMETHING for him, before he walks as a free agent (I think).

they wouldn't get anything for him, but could just be a courtesy opportunity to him for his four years of service. maybe they think him dicing up a defeated Jets defense can help him make some money; other veterans appreciate that type of good will.

I hope the Bills can finally get the next one right.

This makes a lot of sense. It's a solid move.

It might help get Bowles a little closer to getting canned. And they don't risk a 30-million dollar Taylor injury. And they don't put Cardale at risk of looking bad in a game where folks are packed in.

I figure Shady will get light duty too depending on how it goes early on.

If a guy is as bad as Manuel I don't care what courtesy it is. I want Jones getting reps

I agree with you too, just coming up with whatever their rationale could be.

Week 17 for non playoff teams is akin to early season NBA games. It's usually very clear who cares and who doesn't. It's a good day to trick folks fo sho.

Rob Ryan is a TERRIBLE defensive coordinator and was a big part of Rex's undoing in Buffalo. I do think Rex will have to become a DC somewhere before anyone else would ever take another chance on him.

I agree Rob is horrible.

But I just don't think it was a good fit for Rex from the start.

Right. It's like they hired Rex Ryan and then fired him because they realized he was Rex Ryan. Maybe those early wins against the Pats got him the gig.

If I was willing to take on Rex as a head coach, there's no way I let him hire Rob if I'm in charge. No way in big font. I assume that was a concession made because of other thing. Like: we're gonna draft a dude you hate in the 2nd round and install a weird package to use EJ Manuel on trick plays but we'll let you staff your lame brother to an undisclosed role and pay him so he can pay off his debts to *insert food or adult franchise of your choice*.
