Freddie Mitchel a Packer

Recommended Posts

The Packers are bringing in Freddie Mitchell for a workout today - This guy was solid at UCLA but has been nothing in the Pros and never will be anything. Why the cheeseheads are wasting their time on him just kills me. Anyone think they will actually sign this guy?

I would take a look at Charles Lee. :pointstosky:

Didn't Charles Lee play for the Packers originally?

 2 years with the Packers and 3 with Tampa, mostly doing special teams work.

Shouldn't that tell you where Jerry Rice and Curtis Conway are at currently? A team that has lost 3 of its top 4 WRs for the forseeable future has no interest in them.

As a packer fan my guess is it looks like this:

1. Andrae Thurman

2. Fred Ex

3. Charles Lee

RB

1. Walt Williams

2. Kerry Carter

Both Thurman and Williams spent training camp with the packers and thus have knowledge of the offense etc. Williams is a decent RB and could figure into the RBBC that will soon be upon us. Thurman doesn't have the experience of Fred Ex or C Lee, but he's a special teamer and has some potential.

I wouldn't waste a ff roster spot on anything here.

I think being a highly ranked 1st round pick really gave him a big head. Maybe this experience will bring him back down to earth. The guy had talent in college. He needs to learn how to learn. He thought he knew it all, maybe this will change his attitude a little.

I really thought Charles Lee was talented. He looked good a few times in TB but I guess I was wrong about him. Playing with Favre can make guys a lot better.

I brought up Walt Williams in an earlier thread on the Packers injury problems; in TC they made it sound like he was battling Tony Fisher for the 3rd RB slot. I was surprised when they signed ReShard Lee after the Davenport injury; maybe they don't think that much of Williams afterall....

As for Andrae Thurman, he's currently on the Titan's 53 man roster. They'd probably sign Free Freddie before they traded anything for Andrae...

Fred Gibson, drafted by the Steelers. Big, fast WR who could learn from Driver and Favrerererrrre.

isn't he still on the team?

I think they should sign Charles Lee.

It would fun just to see all the Lee's out on the field at the same time- Charles, Reshard, and Donald....

On a serious note, Charles Lee did a great job when given the opportunity in Tampa...

The Titans just cut Thurman.........from the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel today.

Thurman, whom the Packers released in their final cut-down, most recently played for Tennessee. The Titans deactivated Thurman on Sunday after coach Jeff Fisher said he violated team rules while in Arizona with the team, and cut him Monday.

He is subject to waivers and his agent, Ken Zuckerman, said he expected to hear from Green Bay if Thurman cleared

Isn'rt Charles Lee in ARZ? I remember seeing him a few times and he still looked really good, just too much depth at that position there.

The Green Bay Packers opted for familiarity instead of a big name when they added a pair of receivers to their 53-man roster on Tuesday.

The Packers passed on veteran Freddie Mitchell, who was unimpressive in his workout, and instead signed Taco Wallace and claimed Andrae Thurman on waivers from Tennessee.

Green Bay also re-signed running back Walt Williams, who was with the Packers last season but was cut at the end of training camp last month.

The Packers started the day with one open roster spot and created two others when they placed running back Ahman Green on injured reserve and released receiver Jamal Jones.

In Wallace, the Packers get a player whom General Manager Ted Thompson picked in the seventh round of the 2003 draft when he was with the Seattle Seahawks. The 6-foot, 192-pound Wallace, is a strong, possession-type receiver who also can play special teams.

Wallace, 24, spent time on the Seahawks’ practice squad in 2003 and 2004 and was promoted to the 53-man roster for parts of each season. In 2003, he played in the NFC wild-card playoff game against the Packers. Last season, he played in three games but didn’t have a reception. He was cut at the end of training camp this summer.

Thurman, 25, rejoined the Packers after spending five weeks with the Titans. He was released on Monday, shortly after he was suspended for a violation of team rules.

The 5-11, 192-pound Thurman played in two games for the Packers as a rookie last season and caught two passes. He was waived last month at the end of training camp.

The Packers have five receivers on their roster, but Robert Ferguson is expected to miss at least two weeks with a sprained left knee.

They hoped Mitchell would be impressive during a workout on Tuesday, but they felt Wallace could provide a more immediate impact. Mitchell was coming off a knee injury and had arthroscopic surgery five weeks ago.

“Everyone has their own personnel decisions to make,” said Matt Couloute, Mitchell’s agent. “I’m not really sure why they didn’t sign him. He’s healthy. He’s back to 100 percent, but I’m not sure what happened.”

Williams, 28, did not work out for any other NFL teams after the Packers cut him. He was working out in Baton Rouge, La., according to his agent, Chad Wiestling.

The Packers had been hesitant to bring back Williams because he has a history of injuries.

The 6-1, 215-pound Williams, a three-year veteran, played in one game for the Packers last season, rushing for 42 yards on six carries against Houston before an ankle injury ended his season.

“He’s definitely thrilled to be back there,” Wiestling said. “He’s just been staying in shape and waiting for a call, whether it was from the Packers or anyone else.”

The Packers also signed tight end Lyonel Anderson, a 6-3, 253-pound rookie free agent from Kansas, to the practice squad.

and released offensive lineman Joe Hayes.

My favorite Fredex quote comes this year the week before he gets cut. He mentions to a reporter questioning if he can make the team without playing in the preseason,"I was breastfed on big plays, they know what I can do!"
