SI's summary of the Deadskins off season moves

Recommended Posts

Washington: The Redskins were saved from salary-cap hell by the new CBA extension, which freed up another $7 million-plus of cap space, allowing them to avoid having to dismantle their roster. So what do they do? Rush right out and get themselves mortgaged back up to the gills, tossing out a staggering $31.8 million, six-year contract to the Rams' Adam Archuleta, making him the richest safety in NFL history.

Receiver Antwaan Randle El and linebacker Andre Carter also got hefty deals, and Washington opted to send both a third- and fourth-round pick to San Francisco in exchange for inconsistent receiver Brandon Lloyd. Even reserve tight end Fauria and backup quarterback Todd Collins got in on the money train.

The Redskins' set-the-market contracts are bound to catch up to them one day. My guess is it'll be after head coach Joe Gibbs calls it a career for a second time, in a year or two.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As pissed as I am about the Eagles not going after Hutchinson, J. Peterson, or M. Anderson and losing out on Bentley, at least they didn't just throw crazy money away on average players. Snyder needs to stop running the Redskins like a fantasy football team!

Crazy money? So what. Why do you care what Snyder spends? You people hating on Snyder sound like a broken record. You can't seem to grasp that his strategies on building a team differs from other owners. He's paying for a proven commodity vs. an unknown. Drafting is great when it works out, or you can end up with Ryan Leaf. Mark B is ancient and its pretty obvious that this is his last year. It makes sense for Gibbs to make pick up whatever FA's he deems nescessary to make a run this year. Yeah Danny overpayed, but so what. I'd rather have a big spender over a miser anyday.

No, I'm just sick of hearing baout how great the Deadskins will be this year and clearly so are the guys at SI.

Outside of that Homer moron, what other teams/people have I "bashed"? I have actually given props to the Pats, Lions, and Vikings just to name a few......Get your facts straight before coming to the big boy table chief!

Just an FYI, SI wrote the article, not me......You are right about one thing though, at least Synder trys to spend money to improve (even though his waste it on average players). I wish the Eagles would open up the purse strings a bit......maybe they are just waiting to pick up E, Moulds, who is better then either Lloyd or Randle El?

As much as I hate the rest of the division - I understand it's just flat out better when all the teams in the East are good. In fact, I'd rather have it that way. Personally, I think Danny boy has way overspent on his new acquisitions - in Randle's case, he overpaid by $13 million. But I do agree that I'd rather have a pro-active owner goof up on the side of trying.

Jerry Jones tried like hell (and wanted to be) Al Davis when he first came into the league. Now Danny boy Snyder is trying like hell to be Jerry Jones. Only time will tell if his way nets him 3 titles.

Danny openly talks about consulting with JJ as soon as he became owner of the Redskins. I like a guy who can swallow his pride and ask advice from our biggest enemy.

Only time will tell if these moves will bring a championship to DC.

Very Well Said

Mr stevejohnson -- You are making one heck of a name for yourself! Your insight has been unmatched! Your knowledge is off the charts!

**MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION **

- How did you get a seat at the big boy table??

It amazes me that these "writers" are still getting the 'Skins cap situation (pre or post CBA extension) wrong.

Is it just ignorance or lazy "journalism"?

Yeah, you guys are right. The Redskins have been a dominating team since Synder took over. I mean just look at all of the division championships, playoff games, and Super Bowls they have won over the last 10 years! What was I thinking?

I'm sorry for dissing you DEAD, uh I mean, REDskins fans. Your team is by far the best in the NFL and their record over the past 10 years proves it.

Thanks for setting me straight!

Over/under at 9 - I'll take the UNDER. Being that the Skins are such a dominating team, I win the push. Any takers?

The Skins are not in cap hell, or they couldn't have signed all these guys. Nor will they be in cap hell. Most of the players they've signed won't get half of what their total contract value is listed at. Let's face it, journalists are pretty stupid when it comes to numbers. The only player they lost that they probably would have kept is Pierce last year. I think Lloyd is their #2 WR, Randel El is #3. But they probably got El more for special teams purposes and to keep teams from stacking the box against Portis, since LBs have to stay honest with the trick plays. Lloyd was the #1 in SF, and should be a nice complement to Moss and Cooley (who should have dropped down your fantasy draft a bunch due to these signings).

As for Brunell, he has one more average year in him...he's certainly no worse than guys like Bledsoe that are on teams that SI rates highly. He's probably a middle of the pack QB. I can certainly name more than 10 starters worse than him. If Campbell is the man to replace him long term, I've got no idea. Nobody has seen him play. Word is he's already better than Brunell, and is ready to go should Brunell get hurt. Who knows?

SI also rates Miami low...I think this is wrong too. Even getting a hurt CPep is better than starting Frerotte. They have a good number of picks, so they can fix their secondary within 2 years. CLE, NO and ATL also did some nice things.

I'd say MIN is the one that screwed up. Guaranteeing a whole contract is a great way to have a player get hurt, and count on your books for 7 years as your highest paid player. Yeah they got a great player, but the upside of that deal for MIN is minimal. Plus Chester Taylor is not an answer at RB. He's OK, but they've got like 4 RBs once again.

There is plenty of time to take bets. It's only March for crying out loud. How/why would I "whelch" though?

I usually bet money but being that this is a message board, I'll go with whatever.....

the basic premiss for the article is just garbage...clearly the redskins spend money on players that they think will help their team but why does the amount of money they spend have to always be the focus? the cap hell rhetoric is just getting so tiresome...call me when they have to start cutting droves of players and starting 20 rookies but until then, it's just useless to beat that drum EVERY year. how come these lazy columists never get held accountable when their cap hell predictions never come true? the article should have focused a little more on why these free agents won't help the skins...oh, that's right...it'd have been much harder to bash the skins if we were talk'n "X's" & "O's".

Yeah, SI really stinks. I mean it's not like they are the most widely read sports publication in the world or anything! Anyone who doesn't think that a domanating team like the Redskins hasn't done an excellent job this off season is a joke!

A recent SI article claimed Philly is the worst team in the NFC East now. So at least they got one thing right.

now why do their new free agents suck again? not because how much they get paid but why they won't help the redskins.

SI writes feel good storys about people in sports - nothing more.

ANd PLEASE reference just one REDSKIN fan that says they are DOMINATE? You can't..because Skins fans don't say those types of things. All we have said is we have supported the moves made by management to better the team. People who mention over payments -- well, we just don't care bout HOW much anyone gets paid, BECAUSE WE DON"T SIGN THE CHECKS--- Why not talk about the Vikings OVERPAYING for a guard? or Seattle overpaying for Peterson? Over Falcons over paying for Abraham??

NO ONE CARES!!!! Expect the fans of teasm who sit on their arse and do nothing. Sure the Skins overpay for players - but they address their needs - thats all the fans care about.... U know why I knbow that ...becuase Fed Ex stadium is sold out every game... Synder just raised parking to almost $40 a pop -- and fans continue to go to the games, because we know he will put the $$$ back into the team.

Skins addressed their needs via free agency and the Skins are in better position then last year. END OF STORY - PLEASE PLEASE move on!!

I wish I could argue but their is still lots of time to improve. Pick up Moulds, have a good draft and we could be right back in the mix!

and of course if the Skins picked up Moulds there would be loads of social security jokes being mentioned with Brunell. -

Lets say they split with the Boys and Giants and beat Iggles twice

They SHOULD WIN against

Atlanta,

Tennessee,

Minnesota

New Orleans,

Houston,

St. Louis

and these are the tough games

- so if they go 2-2 or 1-3 Skins will STILL be over 10 wins.

Carolina,

Jacksonville,

Tampa Bay,

Indianapolis,

Even though we all misspell at times, I agree with you 100%. Just realize that you will now be called a "racist" for your correction of his language.. :P

My mom was an english teacher at Cal Berkley, so I grew up being constantly being corrected.

Now I try and correct all the asshats at my work, and in the process have became the biggest asshat of them all..
