49ers may take Huff because the Packer will take Vernon Davis... or even Hawk

SF make it happen!!! Go get Bush! we could use all positions, but Bush is instant offense and can do multiple things. Just make it happen!

It's looking more and more like the Niners are going to take Vernon Davis. Nolan thinks he's not only the best TE but the best WO on the board.

So what need do we address now? Are we going to get a CB? I would love for justice to fall to us at 22, but I bet the 'boys take him right now.

I would like to see us draft Chad Jackson or Santonio Holmes if they keep falling. We need some offensive weapons. I wouldn't mind seeing Winston Justice either. I know we need some defensive help as well either DB or like a Manny Lawson. We'll see, we need help everywhere.

I agree, but there are many linebackers in the draft, and some people thought justice was as good as ferguson.

Also, they could use a WR and both holmes and jackson are on the board.

Manny Lawson I believe is our #1 guy right now.

But I wouldn't mind if we ended up with Chad Jackson

Lawson or Justice - either would make sense for the Niners. Perhaps the Pats make it an easy call.

Also, maybe Jimmy Williams.

I wonder if DEN wishes that they hadn't made the trade. SF gets the pass rush that DEN needs too.

I like this pick plenty.

His value is maiximized in a 3-4. In the Broncos d he would only be a linebacker, and our starters are set there (probably draft some depth later).

I questioned the trade-up with Denver at the time, wondering why they did it so early... but everything fell into place. They got the last top-tier 3-4 OLB in the draft.

Being a niner fan, it is nice to have something to get excited about. My only worry is that we have not addressed our holes at conerback. Walt Harris is going to help a little bit but we could have used another CB this draft.

Yep - prolly have to address that with the leftover 3rd rounder.

I thought that we gave up our first and third round pick to the broncos for 22. I guess I am incorrect.

Does anyone have thoughts on our offensive line? With the addition of Allen I think we are going to be better off, but he is really old and who knows how much he has left in the tank. So who are our staters? Newberry, Harris, Allen, (the over rated bill that we paid too much for) Jennings, and the 2nd rounder from last year?

the O Line has not really been figured out yet. But Smiley and Baas are also in the picture

I really like the Niners picks so far. I didn't know Lawson ran a 4.43 40, that's nice speed. There is no doubt Lawson is going to fit well in Nolans Defense.

I agree CB is still a hole they need to fill, maybe they go CB in round 3, or could we see a trade up?

I could also see them taking a WR in the third round.

SF gave up #37 & #68 for #22.

SF still has #84 (from WAS for Lloyd).

Niners will pick Chris Gocong from Cal Poly with their 3rd round pick.

He is going to be great as a rushing linebacker.

Niners took a 5'9" WR?

Why would they do that? Nooo....I love the 1st two picks... but a short WR?

Williams was a very productive receiver and returner at Wisconsin, with many of the athletic traits necessary to overcome his lack of size. He is no doubt a smart kid who learns well when you see how sharp his routes are -- he closes the cushion quickly, uses his shoulder dip to freeze the cornerback, and has a burst out of the cut to get separation consistently. On passes outside of his frame, he does a good job of reaching out and plucking the ball with his hands, but on easy passes, he will body catch and drop some passes he should catch. He is surprisingly good at avoiding the jam and getting into the route quickly. He is a very quick and elusive runner in the open field -- he has the vision and instincts to find the hole, follows his blockers very well, and has the burst to get through cracks and make big plays. Obviously, the big problem is that short and thin receivers struggle to be productive NFL receivers. Overall, Williams is going to be over-looked because of his size, but will stick in the NFL and within a season or two, he will be a good No. 3 receiver and will be able to contribute as a returner. Whatever team that gets him needs to be sure not to over-use him in order for him to be a productive receiver and returner in the NFL.

Williams is a very quick-footed receiver, who runs very sharp and precise routes -- his burst out of cuts enables him to consistently get separation. He has good hands and has shown the ability to adjust to off-target passes and make tough catches in traffic consistently. He consistently has shown an ability to make catches in traffic, take hard hits right after the catch, and hold on to the ball. He is a quick and elusive runner in the open field, and consistently makes plays with the ball in his hands (both as a receiver and return man). He is a highly competitive blocker, who has shown a knack for finding a way to eliminate his man.

Williams's biggest weakness is his lack of size -- he will struggle to stay healthy if he is over-used in the NFL. He lacks the bulk and playing strength to break tackles in the NFL, and he will struggle to gain yards after contact consistently. He has a bad habit of letting passes within his frame get into his body, and he ends up fighting the ball and dropping some easy passes. He does not consistently get down low to catch the low pass well.

Williams is a very good athlete, and that is the main reason he has been such a productive college receiver despite lacking size. His very quick feet combine with his agility to let him shake and defeat a cornerback jam easily -- he gets past the cornerback and into a route in a flash. He consistently runs very sharp routes, and his very quick feet enable him to burst out of cuts and get separation from cornerbacks consistently. He has very good playing speed, but lacks the premier playing speed that small receivers need. He has the quickness and agility to make tacklers miss running after the catch, and the burst to get through cracks quickly. He has the natural coordination, hands and body control to adjust and make tough catches on high passes without any trouble at all.

Williams is a very tough receiver, who has consistently shown the willingness to go up high and catch passes in traffic, takes the hard hit and holds onto the ball. Despite his lack of size, Williams has consistently been a clutch receiver for Wisconsin -- not only did he make big catches on important downs, but he also showed a consistent ability to make a big return in key situations to set the Wisconsin offense up with a short field. His overall production has been consistently good as both a receiver and a returner. He always finds a way to get open, has good hands catching the ball, and is a good runner after the catch. He has shown his commitment to the team by continuing to be an impact returner, even though he is their go-to receiver and does not have anything left to prove. He plays with a lot of pride and never quits -- he fights for extra yards until he is on the ground, and really stays after his blocks until the whistle.

Williams is a smart receiver, and it shows in his very good routes and use of his hands to consistently defeat the jam quickly and easily. He has very good instincts finding open spots vs. a defense, and has the vision and instincts to take advantage of his quickness and burst running after the catch. He generally maintains his concentration on nearly every snap, but every once in a while, he will lose focus, letting easy passes get into his body, and ends up fighting the ball and dropping some passes he should catch.

Williams is not only much shorter than ideal for a receiver, but he is very thin at barely over 170 pounds. He has been a surprisingly durable player at Wisconsin, staying in the lineup, despite catching a lot of passes and returning so many balls, but with his lack of size, there are real concerns about his ability to maintain his durability if over-used in the NFL. He is a naturally explosive receiver, who bursts off the ball into routes and has a burst out of cuts to get separation consistently. Additionally, as a returner, he has an explosive burst to get through cracks fast. Despite being a tough and competitive player, who has shown an ability to keep his feet vs. hits and to run through arm tackles, his lack of size will hinder his ability to play strong consistently in the NFL -- he will not be a tackle breaker and will struggle to block bigger defensive backs.

Hrm...

I can't say I'm in love with this pick, unless they think he can be a speedy kick/punt returner...if so, then it'd be nice to see special teams get some attention for a change.

Vernon Davis is going to be a stud - I am convinced. And with two TE sets with he & Eric Johnson, Gore, Bryant and Battle on the field, Alex Smith better put up or shut up, so long as the revamped like holds up (*cough, Jennings, cough*)

But this has the makings of a very nice offense. If Davis is indeed the real deal, it's going to open things up all over the field.

And Lawson is a total stud in the making. Sideline to sideline speed and a nose for the QB - I read about him as a possible 22 early in the week, and he sounded like he had more upside than any of the DBs there.

The Niners still have significant needs at O-Line and in the defensive backfield. It would have been nice to address one of those in the 3rd rather than grabbing the little receiver.

Depends - special teams is huge. Get good field position with a lightning quick WR and you that fills a good need too.

Niners have an early 4th (4.03) a 5th, 2 6ths and 3 7ths. This draft is deep in OL, and they've made improvements in the off season to the OL and DBs already with Allen and the former 1st round pick they got from San Diego. Plus they signed a safety.

I agree - they need DBs, but I'll reserve judgement until I see what they have in mind for this guy.

Then take a guy like Skyler Green who's speedier and more talented in the return game and who could have been gotten with one of those 6th's or 7th's.

yeah, like I said - not wild about this pick. A touch confused by it. Got the receiver in Davis - thought Nolan would be going D D D D OL D

I liked the pick, not as much as I would have liked Bing, but it's solid.

We are looking for a kick/punt returner, and we got one.

And I think they were hoping to get a little Steve Smith out of him as well.

TY for that eval - very helpful. He should contribute to kick returns immediately. They can't use Gore and his surgically repaired knees, so Williams will have a chance to win that gig immediately.

And presumably Bryant/Battle will be the 1-2 wideouts and Williams can be used in the slot. Crisp routes is what I keep hearing about him.

Guest Mr.T

I knew nothing of Williams but reading up on him a bit, I'm not angry with this pick. Sounds at worst to be a solid player for Special teams. Never a bad thing to give Smith another weapon.
