"In My Time Of Dying"

Which also happens to be the greatest drumming song ever, how Bonham's calves didn't explode I'll never know.

61. Heartbreaker - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)

Alot of the fanfare for specific Page solos have to do with how familiar people are with the song itself. A selection included on a more popular album doesn't hurt, either. I remember during the '70's that Stairway To Heaven was the most requested radio song. That status may have changed by now, but the fact that it was never released as a single not only boosted the sales of Led Zeppelin IV (...Untitled, Zoso, Four Symbols, Runes, Sticks...whatever the fvck you want to call it); it added something to the mythical aspects of the song. It's sheet music is the biggest seller in history.

Since I've Been Loving You was a watershed song for the group, as was the album Led Zeppelin III, because they started to incorporate more folk and blues elements into the music. Although the album isn't their stunning debut, the pop friendly II or classic IV; III nonetheless finds the band riding the crest of their early '70's creativity when they were willing to experiment without sounding portentous.

I like all of the guitar work on Heartbreaker because although Page is performing each segment; he sounds like four different guitarists at once. Whole Lotta Love is close to what random fans might consider a "typical" Page solo. Dazed And Confused took on a life of it's own in concert with it's half hour length and Page's bow work. But all five of the solos on that list are from the band's first 4 albums.

Presence is a charming enough album for hardcore Led Zeppelin followers; but it's not the best place to start for the casual fan, critics interested in the band's music or people compiling lists of the greatest guitar solos ever. Page's playing and production was hampered by his drug useage, Plant recorded the album while in a wheelchair following his car crash, there's none of the acoustic guitar work or John Paul Jones' keyboard flourishes from prior albums, several of the songs go on way too long and the general mood sounds sparse and uninspired. That didn't stop the album from going to #1; but I'd bet it's the fan's least popular album besides In Through The Out Door.

I've always liked the Communication Breakdown solo. It sounds on the brink of being out of control the whole time.

An oddball solo I really like is the one in "Hots On For Nowhere" off "Presence."

You state an unequivocal fact. Or at least I completely agree with you. Also happens to be my favorite song ever. Totally lost among all the other Zep classics, but an absolute work of art.

Is this Buckethead person the clown that had the column in Guitar Player Magazine? Is he really that good to be in the top 100 so many times? Just asking.

Buckethead is the stage name of Brian Carroll, an avant-garde guitarist and minimalistic composer. Although multi-instrumental, he is most trademarked for his virtuosic guitar-playing, characterized by a blinding fretwork speed and idiosyncratic lead lines. He has recorded several solo albums, as well as collaborative albums with Les Claypool, Bill Laswell, Bootsy Collins, and System of a Down's Serj Tankian. His numerous limited-release albums cover and blend many different musical genres. His stage name and persona comes from an upside-down KFC paper bucket which he wears on his head during performances along with a Japanese Kabuki mask; his biography claims that he was raised by chickens.

In an interview with Revolver, Ozzy Osbourne stated that he had offered to have Buckethead play guitar in his band at Ozzfest. Ozzy quickly changed his mind after meeting with him when Buckethead refused to go on stage without a disguise:

"I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the ###### bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green ###### Martian's-hat thing! I said, 'Look, just be yourself'. He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother'. So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!'. I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing ###### mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up'? Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a motherfucker!"

Buckethead was a member of Guns N' Roses from 2000 to 2004.

kutulu, thanks for the response on Buckethead. I think that is the guy from Guitar Player Mag. A lot of great players are crazier than shiot. Danny Gatlin and Roy Bucannan come to mind.
