Why does the human body crave drugs and bad stuff?

Recommended Posts

I wonder about this occasionally.

On the biological level, why do our brains tell us that things like caffeine, alchohol, nicotine etc feel good and are items that should be repeatedly introduced into our systems?

I can see the reasoning behind sugar and fatty foods, because having fat = stored energy for when food is scarce.

But why the others? I consider mysle fto be pretty health in terms of diet and excersice, but I'm regularly pumping my body full of coffee and alchohol because my brain tells me that I want it. And when i was a smoker? Forget it.

Any ideas? I can't figure it out. You would think the human body would naturally be repulsed by caffeine, nicotine and alchohol since it is not good for you.

The only thing I can think of is that these things RARELY occur in nature, and in small doses they ARE beneficial... it;s just a matter of us being able to offer them in a constant never ending supply that is the problem.

You do have a small point here. In small doses, caffeine and alcohol can be beneficial or at least not cause any harm.

You cannot say the same for nicotine however. There is a reason most people cough, choke and hack the first time they try to smoke. If they continue, the addictiveness properties of the drug takes over.

Yeah, good point.

What is the benefit of caffeine? I think alchohol helps in blood flow or something, which is why it is recommended to have a drink a day?

Isn't nicotine a stimulant?

What is the benefit of caffeine?

Caffeine is metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 oxidase enzyme system into three metabolic dimethylxanthines, which each have their own effects on the body:

Paraxanthine (84%) – Has the effect of increasing lipolysis, leading to elevated glycerol and free fatty acid levels in the blood plasma.

Theobromine (12%) – Dilates blood vessels and increases urine volume. Theobromine is also the principal alkaloid in cocoa, and therefore chocolate.

Theophylline (4%) – Relaxes smooth muscles of the bronchi, and is used to treat asthma. The therapeutic dose of theophylline, however, is many times greater than the levels attained from caffeine metabolism.

Caffeine stimulates the nervous and cardiovascular systems. It makes us feel better (euphoric), less tired and increases the heart rate, blood flow, respiratory rate, and metabolic rate.

Alcohol is a depressant but can produce euphoric affects as well. Well it's not recommended if you currently do not drink. But if you do, then some have said it's okay to have some red wine. Something to do with the alcohol reduces the stickiness of our blood platelets. But I'm no doctor. I just play one on TV :D

Nicotine has nothing to do with the hacking and coughing of a first time smoker.

This was going to be my point. Simply put, people have found ways over the years to enhance naturally occuring substances already in the body.

In the short term yes. But at the beginning stages of trying any of these drugs (which is what I think EM was getting at) our bodies have more of an aversion to nicotine and the other chemicals in cigarettes than we do with caffeine or alcohol.

I think it's the other chemicals and the whole process of inhaling smoke more than the nicotine though.

Nicotine has nothing to do with the hacking and coughing of a first time smoker.

It's prolly a combination of the nicotine, ammonia and tar.

Drugs mimic or block neurotransmitters. Often this can alter reward pathways in the brain and can cause physical changes to neurons in the brain. Basically the drugs stimulate or repress a CNS function which creates a positive chemical interaction in our body. Our bodies are basically giant chemistry labs.

Some of those drugs trigger the release of endorphins.

Which is the #1 reason why drugs are illegal: the carnage caused by free roaming Ewoks

Nicotine is a highly addictive stimulant but the coughing comes from inhaling an irritant (smoke). Try rolling up any dried leaves and inhaling the smoke- you will cough.
