What NOT to do on Draft Day

Recommended Posts

I think if we think collectively on this, we'd be able to weed out all the "bonehead/what was I thinking?/I drafted Fred Taylor again!" moments that happen to the best of us in the heat of the moment on Draft Day.

Here's a couple to start off:

Don't reach for a QB (see everyone that drafted Peyton #1 overall).

Don't forget to handcuff the backup of your stud running back.

Double-check byes before making any selection.

What other rules/ laws do you abide by (or try to) on Draft Day?

Don't come unprepared for the draft and assume last year's stats will be duplicated in 2006.

Don't decide before the draft that G&Ts are what will sustain you and provide you with insight on all the best picks. The unfortunate thing is that as the draft goes on and the imbibation increases, you start to really believe you're doing spectacularly well.

The sad statement about this particular league is that I still finished with 9 wins and made the playoffs.

:D

Avoid rookie receivers... a good rookie year stat-wise is not good fantasy-wise.

For every Randy Moss there are 50 Chad Johnsons,Steve Smiths,or Terrell Owens's  (look it up)

try to not grab RB's in RBBC's. dont reach for WR's after the top 5-10 are gone. dont grab kickers and defenses early, they have such similar value all the way through.

Don't forget to tell the guy with the worst record last year...or the guy that took both McNabb and TO and swore he would win the whole thing...that he is a complete ###### and is just lucky he even got invited back.

Don't listen to trash talk but give all you can. Anything to shake someone's confidence helps.

if your a good actor, pick out the dope of your league ( if you cant figure out who this person is, then it's you) and do one of the following things.

1. give him the "Tommy Maddux will throw for 5000 yards" speech, except not about Tommy, see you you can get them hyped on a paticular player.

2. The "dope" tends to try and draft some of his favorite players, tell him you are planning on drafting the player approx 2-3 rounds ahead of their ADP.

3. Misinformation is the key, target 3-5th rounders and put out that said player has been moved down the depth chart and is in a fued with Coach/QB or if your really dirty spread bogus injury info.

4. Bring bad gouge to the draft for your unprepared friends, Last years draft magazines or very bad ones for this year will do.

I didn't swear I'd win the whole thing, but I took McNabb and Owens last year in my re-draft league and finished 2nd

Never join a league that would have you as a member. :)

let them steal some bad cheat sheets form you. leave them laying around and get pissed when they look at them.

if you are on this site, this wouldn't apply to you, but don't buy a magazine on the way to the draft and that is your preparation. i have done that for basketball drafts. needless to say i finished in last. they ragged on me so much, that will never happen again. besides basketball draft noramlly happens around end of football and i'm getting ready for the playoffs. <_<

as a commish, get there early and prepared. if you are worrying about tables and food and crap, you won't be ready for the draft. Focus.

Don't drink heavily the night before, before the draft, or during the draft.

I like a challenge :D ...and having a built in excuse :o

dont smoke pot

WHY!?

Because you will hold up the draft and if there is a time limit you will never make it.

I like to comment on draft picks very sarcastically, like "Oooo, LJ # 1, really great pick, man" and if I'm lucky, I'll get into their head and they'll be second-guessing themselves the whole time and handcuff Priest in the 5th.

 (Priest sitting on the altar trying to rehab his neck)

do not draft Fred Taylor or Julius Jones...I don't care how much of a "good value" you are getting on them. You will regret it by week 5.

I agree on not reaching for Manning, but everyone laughed at me when I drafted Palmer in the 5th round last year. I say if you are confident enough to reach for someone, do it.

But here's my rule:

Although you are having fun, kicking back a few, you still need to treat it like a poker game and keep a poker face on.

Don't show your buddies that you are happy about a pick or you are upset.

Watch owners. You can tell a lot my their facial expressions. If they are not happy about a pick, they will show it. Use that for your trade advantage.

Oh, and I agree on the not smoking weed part, it throws out your logical side and at the end of the night, you wonder why you picked WRs from round 2 to 7.
