Top 10 Mental Pictures From the NFL

Recommended Posts

In no particular order:

1. "The Catch"

2. Bo Jackson scoring then running into the tunnel

3. Mike Ditka and Ricky Williams dressed as bride & groom (uh, yeah)

4. The look on Gruden's face after "the tuck rule" call

5. Steve Young's totally ungraceful belly flop into the end zone after a 30 yd run.

6. Kevin Jones plowing over Ray Lewis like he was made of cardboard

7. Terrell Owens doing the "Ray Lewis dance" after scoring on the Ravens. He must've worked on that all week because it was perfect.

8. Derrick Mason getting stopped 1/2 yd from the end zone in what was one of the most exciting finishes to a game I can remember

9. Tony Dorsett's 99 yard dash with the stiff arm

10. Barry Sanders 1994 39 yd TD run against the Pats, dragging the saftey into the end zone the last 5 yards to display power along with the hip-crazy action and deeking that got him there in the 1st place. To this day that's the best run I've ever seen.

What are you top 10 plays/images that are etched into your memory forever?

Ed McCaffrey's broken leg catch on MNF in 2001. The slow-mo replays of his lower leg flopping around still haunt my dreams.

One that I think of is not necessarily a big play, but one that was game changing.

Giants/49ers back in the day, I believe it was the NFC Championship. Leonard Marshall hitting Montana from the blindside, drilling him into the ground (with his weight on top), and after the play is over, not being able to see Montana's body because Marshall was on top of him. The picture is seeing Marshall getting up and seeing Montana laying their motionless on the ground. At that point, I honestly thought Montana was dead.

To this day it's the most devastating hit I've ever seen on live TV.

"Marshall is probably best known for his hit that knocked Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana out of the 1990 NFC Championship game. In the 4th quarter he hit Montana so hard that he suffered a bruised sternum, bruised stomach, cracked ribs, and a broken hand. This would be the last game Montana would ever start for the 49ers."

In no particular order:

- Theismann getting his leg snapped on MNF

- Kevin Dyson getting stopped 1 yd. from the tying TD in the 1999 Super Bowl

- Elway's helicopter landing vs. the Packers in the 1997 Super Bowl

- Patriots lineman making snow angels after beating the Raiders in the Tuck Rule game

- "Homerun Throwback/Music City Miracle" - Bills/Titans wildcard game

- Steve Largent absolutely blowing up Mike Harden of the Broncos after a Harden INT, and recovering the fumble

- Norwood's Wide Right

- Dwight Clark's "The Catch"

- Earnest Byner's fumble on the 2-yd line vs. the Broncos

- John Riggins turning 4th and 1 into the clinching TD in the 1982 Super Bowl

As far as live, I gotta say Barber's pick of McNabb in the NFC Championship game to ice it for Tampa. I thought for sure the fans were gonna collectively burn the Vet down when that happened. :(

I hated that one - and while etched into my mind also, I try to forget it as often as possible. That was one sickening moment for Niners fans.

:(

I'd say McNafro's performance on a broken fibula a couple years ago is up there too, though not really a "moment".

Likewise for the comeback Peyton Manning pulled off against the Bucs on MNF in 2003 when they were down 35-14 or so in the 4th quarter with 4 minutes to play...

Which reminds me of the Jets-Dolphins, where the Jets were down 30-7 in the 4th and the Jets went on to win 40-37. Everyone I knew turned that game off and went to sleep. I happened to watch the finish and was like this:

Mine are Dolphin-centric, but whatever.

The Clock Play.

AJ Duhe's INT for a TD versus the Jets in the Mud Bowl.

A Dolphin receiver whose name escapes me getting helicoptered by the Jets (as seen in the Dire Straits "Walk of Life" video).

Marino pulling up lame with a busted Achilles.

And about a thousand fracking Thurman Thomas screens for long gainers, ruining the Phins' playoff hopes yet again.

OK then:

- Earl Campbells run against the Rams where he focking killed a LB and lost his shirt and half of his shaoulder pads in the process and still wouldnt go down.

- Jackie Smiths dropped TD against the Steelers in the 1978 SB which probably cost them the game at that point anyway.

- Don Beebes strip of the ball from Leon Lett in the Super Bowl

- Music City Miracle

- Napolean Mcallum's leg getting thrashed on MNF.....the replay made me sicker than Thiesmanns injury.

- The Tuck Rule that started the "eh-hem" Patriots Wad-shoot for 3 SB titles.

- Marshalls hit on Montana...YES! Seeya later Joe.... howd that feel????

- Rodney Harrisons recent injury.... I LOVE when he gets hurt! :(

Thats it for now.... there are more maybe Ill post them later

Randall Cunningham getting punked by Carl Banks on MNF, knocked back 5 feet, only to prop himself up and throw a TD strike to Jimmie Giles!

Randall punting the ball 95 yds against the Gints!

McNabb scrambling for what seemed like forever against the Cowboys on MNF and then hit Freddie Mitchell in stride with a bomb!

I was at that game against the Cards. What's really eerie about Sunday's injury and the broken ankle year's back is the same player who broke his ankle was on the field this past Sunday when he tore up his knee (white guy, name escapes me).

Another picture I'll never forget is Koy Detmer dislocating his elbow on MNF against the Niners, and as he was put on the cart (in obvious pain), the players on both teams giving him acknowledgement as he rolled out.

Off the top of my head is:

Bo Jackson running over the Boz for a TD. :(

Chad Johnson's river dance.

Mark Bavaro carrying the entire(it seemed like) defense down the field :dunno:

Ben Troupe's hurddle of Champ Bailey. :(

Dan Marino's fake spike against the Jets. :(

1) jerry rice fumbling the ball in the 1998 NFC divisional game; but the refs blew the whistle too quick. had it been the correct call; the packers would have won and their dominance of the NFC would have continued

2) TO making the catch that won the 1998 NFC divisional game; pretty deep in the middle while he got nailed by two defenders. great catch; but after that loss, it promted holmgren to leave and started the downward spiral of the Packers.

3) 4-1 2003 NFC divisional playoff game; packers-eagles. Ahman had been running crazy of the Eags all day; if they wouldonvert the 4-1 (should have been easy); the pack would have won the game and continued their miracle season. Instead; they punted leading to the next play...

4) Infamous 4-26 in the 2003 NFC divisional playoff game. OT 4-26 conversion; pack should never have been in OT had sherman made the right call on 4-1.

These 4 plays could have made a HUGE difference in the last decade's history of the Pack, they are burned in my memory and I am still bitter.

On a happier note...

5) the 2003 MNF oakland raider game where favre dropped 399 yds and 4td against them in a rout after his dad died.

Tough to rank in any order.

Dyson 1 yard short

Music city miracle

Favre coming off the field after the TD to Rison in the Super Bowl

Reggie White taking a lap around the field after his last regular season home game in Lambeau against the Tennessee Oilers.

The Catch

Granted I never saw it live and only in some grainy pictures and such...but Bart Starr falling into the endzone in the ice bowl. Partially because Ive heard the story from my mother and grandfather time and time again...and I have picture my father painted of that play that Bart Starr had signed for him.

Willie Davis catching the winning touchdown pass from Joe Montana at Mile High in a Monday Night game. Willie caught the ball in the end zone, ran out, then ran back in just inside the pylon. Joe drove the Chiefs 75 yards in 1:30 to out-Elway Elway in his own house. Joe was lying on the turf with a Broncos defensive player on him, his arms outstretched in the "touchdown" signal.

5. Joe Theisman getting his leg snapped in two

13. The 9ers beating the Giants in the playoffs by tackling the TE on the field goal attempt.

14. The Music City Miracle

15. The Play

- Earnest Byner's fumble on the 2-yd line vs. the Broncos

Easily the worst mental picture in all my years, no doubt... Unless you say teh entire Elway DRIVE....

Vanderjagt shanking that FG last year...

Also Tiki Barber and Drew Bennett scorching the KC defense (if that's what you wanna call it) the past 2 years... Gunther Cunningham doesn't deserve a paycheck, the focking BUM :dunno:

A good mental picture.....

Ray Lewis' unbelievable return TD vs the Titans in that wild card game... There was no looking back for Baltimore that year after stamping that victory like that....

Gary Reasons stuffing Bobby Humphrey's ass on the 1 yard line...

Barry Sanders 50 yard burst vs the Jets to blow by the 2,000 yard mark....

classic mental pictures...

Kellen Winslow being carried off the field by his teammates....

Dwight Clarks catch....

Zooming in on Jim Burt's busted up nose during those cold playoff games....

1993, Eric Allen's electrifying 94 yard interception return against the Jets.

Allen wound up returning 4 INT's for touchdowns that year and was the league defensive player of the year, I believe.

To this day, one of the greatest INT returns I've ever seen.

3) Jets' comeback against the Dolphins on MNF, or as I call it, the Jumbo Elliott game

4) 4th and 26

5) Antonio Freeman's bobbled catch

6) McNabb booed on draft day

7) "OWENS! OWENS! OWENS! HE CAUGHT IT! HE CAUGHT IT! HE CAUGHT IT!"

8) Mike Jones tackling Kevin Dyson 1 yard short of the end zone

9) Morten Andersen's missed FG allowing the Jaguars to make the playoffs

10) Gary Anderson's missed FG allowing Morten Andersen to be the hero for the Falcons

The John Elway helicopter spin.

Frank Reich stepping in for Kelly and mounting the "comeback" I was 15 at the time and my dad called me in to watch it. It was nuts.

...and who are the Aholes who don't want to protect QBs from animals ending their careers ?

Blind side hits, pounding all their weight into the turf,,,the list goes on of HOF QBs that could still be playing if not the numerous concussions.

Ex Cowboy fan from the Staubach, Danny White, through Aikman era.

Troy hitting Alvin Harper with a tight spiral TD bomb, then running across the field with the number 1 sign with his finger (still on NFL Films preface)

Jay Novaceks Zin route, and Aikman targeting his chest for the first TD over the middle.

Emmitt waving good bye to the Eagles defenders following him in the endzone in the rain (I was there at the Vet)

Breaking his shoulder and leading the QBs to victory against the Giants.

Leon Letts kicked fumble against Miami in the snow on Thanksgiving.

Drew Pearsons Hail Mary Catch off the leg. (not live, just highlights, too young)

Tony Dorsetts 99 yard run. (live)

Troy ending his career with yet another concussion, a non fined helmet to helmet blast from Lavaar Arrington.
