Can a male/female combo be considered identical twins?

 

 

no, Fraternal only.

 

 

 

I have boy girl twins and people ask "are they identical" all the time

nope... because to be identical the egg must be fertilzed first before it divides into two seperate eggs (before mitosis etc.)

I have 8 year old identical twin girls. Funny how they do look pretty much the same and people still ask if they are identical.

These guys got you figured out. My twin boys are fraternal. Funny thing is, one is about two inches taller right now, so I often here "Are they twins?" The height difference throws people off.

I have two boys, 5 & 3, and people ask if they are twins all of the time.

 

I :ninja: because not only are they two years apart, but one of them is adopted :mad:

Among monozygotic twins, in extremely rare cases, twins have been born with opposite sexes (one male, one female). The probability of this is so vanishingly small (only 3 documented cases [5]) that multiples having different genders is universally accepted as a sound basis for a clinical determination that in utero multiples are not monozygotic. When monozygotic twins are born with different genders it is because of chromosomal birth defects. In this case, although the twins did come from the same egg, it is incorrect to refer to them as genetically identical, since they have different karyotypes.
