Voter ID Bill

Recommended Posts

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4767206.html

House Bill 626, sponsored by Rep. Phil King, R-Weatherford, would require state election officials to verify citizenship of every applicant for a new voter registration card.

Applicants would have to provide their city, county and state of birth, which the Secretary of State's office would verify. Naturalized citizens would have to list the place and date of their naturalization oath. Critics of the bill said they didn't believe state officials had the capability to conduct the checks.

The voter ID bill would require Texans to show photo identification or two forms of nonphotographic identification before being allowed to cast ballots. Now citizens who bring their voter registration cards to the polls don't have to show a photo ID.

Republicans say the legislation is necessary to combat voter fraud. Democrats say the bill targets a rare form of fraud and is actually designed to suppress turnout by black and Hispanic voters.

I don't really understand what it so overwhelming to ask that you show a valid photo id, such as a passport, DL or state issued ID card, to vote? You have to have one to buy beer? Or drive. Or get a job. Or do anything else, at least I thought.

Personally, I am ready for national ID cards. Just make it the size of my DL.

Who cares if you have a photo ID? that still doesn't mean you're qualified to vote.

You should have to pass a questionare of 10 questions in order to vote.

Too many people vote for people because of how they look or how they sound and they have no focking idea of the platformor issues they are running on. American politics are a focking joke and will always be a joke until this changes.

I'm ready for voting online or over the phone. If you can securely file your taxes that way, I don't see why voting should be different. I also think election day should be a national holiday, and voting should be mandatory. Again, if you are required to file your taxes I don't see why you shouldn't be required to take part in the democratic process. I'd like one of the choices to be "none of the above" so you're not nec. required to vote for someone, just to have your voice heard. They'll never do it because both parties just want to line up their core constituents and face off in elections.

My next move probably will be a house. I haven't bought yet because I had a few really rocky years employment wise - I was laid off three times in the course of two years before landing my current job - so I've had some debt to pay off and I'm saving. I'm probably looking at a renovation project since real estate in Philadelphia is ridiculous - very modest homes are going for $300K+ here.

:dunno: The effort is there the point is life doesn't stop just because it's election day. Most people still have to go to work pick up the kids get them to basketball practice, make dinner, go to school, so when you go to vote and the line is half a mile long what are you supposed to do? Stand there for the next hour and a half while your two year old crys because it's cold and rainy?

I have voted in every election since I was 18, but I understand some people have trouble getting to the polls. A national holiday would help elevate the strain.

I fail to see how that would help all that much. By law your employer has to let you go to vote if you need to take some time for it.

I know, not everybody follows the law, but really there's nothing that requires employers from giving their employees off on national holidays, so if you work for that type of boss, what makes you think this will help?

Frankly, if you are using your kid's basketball practice as an excuse not to vote I'd say your priorities are a little off and that you are definitely sending the wrong message to your kid.

Basketball practice was just one of the thousands of examples I could use to show how someone would have trouble getting to the polls. Also I'm guessing you don't have kids.

Secondly have you ever been to the polls before 9am and after 5pm? It's a cluster fock, because that's when everyone goes to vote. By making it a national holiday those votes would be spread through out the day rather than in a short 4-5 hour window.

Lastly election day should be a celebration. We should have parades, and BBQ's and parties. It shouldn't be what it is now an inconvenience you try and fit into an already hectic day

Why you be wanting to increase the strain on the poor voters who can't afford to miss work to vote? :dunno:

A national holiday is a good idea, but the Demwits oppose it cuz most of their voters don't have jobs.

No, I don't have kids, but if/when I do you can be sure that one of the life lessons that I want to empart onto them is that voting > important than practice (unless he's looking like he has the makings of a pro athelete. :ninja: )

As for when I go to the polls, yes, it is always after work. The polling station is right by my bus stop and I usually am there around 6:30-ish. Never had a problem.

Again, while it would be nice to have the day off and be able to have BBQs and parties, this doesn't address the simple fact that national holidy doesn't = day off. There are plenty of people who have to work on national holidays. It stands to reason that if your employer is the type to give you sh|t about taking some time to vote then they're also the type to not give you the day off.

I have given a plethora of examples that show how getting to the polls is difficult for some people. I just want to make sure we're clear. You opposes election day as a national holiday holiday because...

And you know I would be fine with moving elction day to July 4th. I mean really I don't know of a better day

I also think election day should be a national holiday, and voting should be mandatory.

No focking way voting should be mandatory. Most people have no focking clue about who stands for what. They should not be voting. I am all for people who follow politics to vote. Even if it is a little bit. No way the people who pay attention to nothing should be out there voting.

I kind of like it the way it is. I don't want all the idiots voting personally. (because then the libs would definately win) I kid, I kid!! Seriously, I don't think that many more people would vote if you made it a Holdiay. If you can't get up a a little earlier or get home a little alter in the evening to vote...then maybe you shouldn't be voting. You can vote early and all types of things...and online voting would be a joke. Lets keep it voting...not American Idol.

I don't think the people who don't vote are necessarily any less informed than those who do. Also, that's why I suggested a "none of the above" option. That way you could obstain from voting, but not out of laziness.

I think making it a holiday would boost voting at least a little bit. What's with this "If you can't find 20 minutes you shouldn't be voting" crap? Shouldn't we make voting at least as convenient as paying taxes? Far as online voting, what's the problem with that? Why shouldn't you vote online?

Well... :bench: ...I suppose we could turn election day into election week...you know...just to make sure everyone can make it in case something comes up. :o

I don't think the people who don't vote are necessarily any less informed than those who do. Also, that's why I suggested a "none of the above" option. That way you could obstain from voting, but not out of laziness.

Actually, I was reading a week or so ago about how in some states they want to make "None of the above" an option so there's no confusion as to whether or not someone forgot to vote on a line as opposed to purposely not voting on a line.

I think making it a holiday would boost voting at least a little bit. What's with this "If you can't find 20 minutes you shouldn't be voting" crap? Shouldn't we make voting at least as convenient as paying taxes? Far as online voting, what's the problem with that? Why shouldn't you vote online?

If voting is so important then finding a little time in your day should be a priority.

As far as voting online? Look at the debate over electronic voting machines...and you want to let people do it online?

I can't figure that out either. In some places it's not 20 minutes I've had to wait an hour and half at times.

Like I already said I would be in favor of moving election day to July 4th Everyone is full of national pride, it's warm outside and most people have the day off.

I don't understand this line of argument. Why shouldn't we do everything possible to make voting convenient for people?

As far as voting online? Look at the debate over electronic voting machines...and you want to let people do it online?

There is no reason why voting online or over the phone would be less secure than electronic voting, especially if you back it up with a paper trail (i.e. you receive paper confirmation of your vote a week later in the mail or whatever).

These are just excuses the two political parties trot out to keep voting inconvenient.

Can you really not see the problem with voting online. I am all for it if you have to walk into an agency and show propper id then log on and vote. But, to just let people vote from home is a laughable idea. I can just imagine the scandals!!!

But, you are rigth there is really nothing wrong I can see with a Holiday for voting. But seriously, people stand in line for 2 hourse to ride the new ride at 6 flags. But, you complain about giong to vote. Moreover, most employers don't give their employees federal holidays off anyway. I think the easier answer is early voting...and if soem states don't offer it than they should. Much easier way to fix problem than voting online or creating holidays.
