payouts for league's best record or most points?

Recommended Posts

the leagues that i play in have payouts for the league's best record at the end of the regular season. i think that instead of a payout for the regular season record, they should pay out to the team with the most points. if you think about it the playoffs take into account regular season records anyways, so it only makes sense that the payout for the regular season should be based on overall points and not the luck of the matchups. for instance the third highest scoring player in our league is 3-7 and he has an outside chance of having the most points for the season with a few regular season games left. would it be fair if he scored the most points and ended up about 5-8 and was rewarded with either last playoff spot or maybe nothing at all? i dont see that as a fair outcome. many years it seems as though someone plays against the team with the highest score on a weekly basis. how do your leagues work the payouts?

We give the season's single highest point total all the transaction money. The first 3 are free so it only kicks in after that but usually ends up covering entry fee.

In My league it was $75 to join.

1st place: $300

2nd place: $150

3rd place: $75

4th place: $25

Most Points: $50

Best record: $50

Longest Win Streak: $25

Largest Margin of Victory: $25

Most Points From Drafted Players: $25

Most points from Post-Draft Players: $25

I've found that spreading the prize money around keeps people interested in the season longer. Beforehand people not in playoff contention would bail and prepare for fantasy basketball. At least you can win your money back even if you don't make the playoffs.

Why not just have 12 guys throw in $50, jerk off in an petri dish, then split the money 12 ways?

One of my leagues gives out decent $$$ to the weekly high scorer.

Teams not in the playoffs can still try to shoot the moon.

One winless team in our league won the high score with Roeths 5 tds, JLews 4tds...etc...

No chance at playoffs, but keeps things interesting.

We payout $50 a week to top score, then payout 1st, 2nd, and 3rd after the playoffs. Regular season record/points don't mean squat. 14 team league, 8 make the playoffs and top 3 from playoffs get paid........GET THIS....one team has one 7 of the 10 high score weeks. His team is insane.

we try to keep our league "real life". it's how many games you win, not how many points you score. if you want to play games with how your league works, go for it. it's your money. if you wnat to keep it as close as possible to real life, only wins count.

I'm in a 12 team league were the high points for the season gets all the transaction money. It's $3 every time you pick up a player, $5 per trade and $5 fee every time you start a player who's on a bye. Ends up being between $300 - $350 a year.

League Entry Fee: $200 (boosted from $100 a long time ago, and eliminated in-season fees). 12-team league. $1,430 for main money pots, $780 for weekly prizes for 13-weeks. $90 allocated for fantasy service. $100 to the draft host who is responsible for making sure there is beer and food at the draft. (You can adjust those depending upon your circumstances, service, whatever). No transaction fees, no chasing money after the season starts, and paying out potential money across many categories to eliminate the chance of one team monopolizing everything unless they're outrageously good at every position.

WEEKLY PRIZES for all 13-weeks of the regular season. $60 is available each week, three $20 prizes active for the following categories:

Highest scoring starting lineup: $20.

Highest scoring starting runningbacks (combined): $20.

Highest scoring starting receivers (combined, including TE): $20.

Now, in our league, there is no "flex" crap. So you start 2 RBs, 2 WRs, and 1 TE. You can win no prize... up to all the prizes each week. Another option (that I switched FROM was that only one category was active) - rotating each week starting with total starting lineup, and the winner was awarded all $60.

So... even if you're out of the post-season, there is still money to be won during the regular season... even if just to recoup SOME of your entry fee.

6 of 12-teams make the playoffs, head-to-head league. The two division winners are the #1 and #2 seed regardless of record (each gets a bye). Regular season prizes are awarded to the playoff qualifiers as follows:

#1 Seed - $175.

#2 Seed - $130.

#3 Seed - $75.

#4 Seed - $50.

#5 & #6 Seed - $0

Post-season prizes (you must win your game to win money):

Wildcard Winners: $50/each.

Semi-Finals Winners: $150/each.

Mephisto Bowl Winner: $600.

Basically, the guy who "wins-it-all" has won between $860 and $1,260 since the inception of this program. It really depends on your weekly prizes. If you win NO weekly prizes, qualify as a 5 or 6 seed, and go on to win it all... you will $800... that the LEAST amount the "winner of it all" can win. The most, highly unlikely and obviously, has never happened, would be to win all 3 weekly prizes for all 13-weeks, be the #1 seed, and win the Mephisto Bowl - which would result in winning $1,705.

Usually, 4 of the 12 owners win at least their money back, and I think the worst season of owners winning $0 was 3 owners. Usually only 1 doesn't win something.

I don't have to chase any money down at the end of the season. Owners have a vested interest in putting in their best lineup even if their team blows, just to try to get something back. This setup has worked for me without problems for the better part of a decade.

Yeah, that's real exciting.

Any real fantasy league that wants to design its format to be a race to see who gets the most points - should do that.

Any real fantasy league that wants to incorporate competitions between owners on a week-to-week basis - shouldn't.

We have a 10 team league that started about 1995. We have always awarded the top 4 teams in overall points - 40% to 1st, 30% to 2nd, 20% to 3rd, & 10% to 4th of our transaction money. We charge $2 for waiver transactions & trades, plus $2 for starting a player who gets a zero. Usually our "pool money" will total about $600 so 1st place will get about $240.

We pay out from our entry fee $100 to best regular season record, $100 to superbowl winner, plus a weekly $15 payout to highest scoring team. The loser of our toilet bowl and the last place finisher in overall points throws the party at next years draft.

All of our owners are in agreement that the only TRUE measure of the quality of your team is the year-to-date total points that your team has scored. Remember, in fantasy football, we can not control weekly matchups and the bad luck of facing the weak teams that just happen to have their one great week against you. There was one year, when I finished 1st in overall points and lost the Toilet Bowl. Didn't care - had to chip in on the draft party the next year, but I got the biggest payout and clearly had the best team that year. Also, we have had superbowl winners that have been in the bottom 3 in overall points.

The weekly payouts keep the very, very bad teams somewhat interested even thought they may have no chance at the top 4 or a playoff spot after 10 or 11 weeks. Also, even at this point in the season, a couple of monster weeks can move you up in the overall point race pretty quickly.

Any real Fantasy League....incoporates BOTH....like mine !

50% of the pot goes to the playoff race. (fun having week/week matchups and playoffs/SB)

50% of the pot goes to the Total Points Race. (most accurately rewards the best team that season, period)

Guys love our format for over a decade, and say their other leagues that don't award Total Points, sock.

thats what im thinking because your fantasy team cant play defense against whoever you're playing against that week. so if all you're in control of is how many points your team can score, why not give the regular season award to highest point total? it doesnt have the tarnish the week to week matchups as those still are important for the seedings in the playoffs where obviously the champion will be based on the week to week heads up matchups.
