Not to worry.

George W. Bush is on the job and I've never felt safer.

Odd.....if I posess such an ability and I am China....no way do I let my potential opponents know about it, be able to identify their weakness and perhaps negate my hidden advantage....

Seems like a very strange thing to do..

Not that it would be funny or anything (it really would though), but I would like to have seen the look on the US sailors faces who first spotted it.

Analysts believe Beijing was sending a message to America and the West demonstrating its rapidly-growing military capability to threaten foreign powers which try to interfere in its "backyard".

"It would tie in with what we see the Chinese trying to do, which appears to be to deter the Americans from interfering or operating in their backyard, particularly in relation to Taiwan."

There's yer answer.

Fair enough.

Still, it was a rather stupid thing to do....to allow the enemy to know your operational capacity, and perhaps prepare for it.... Their loss was greater than any potential gain.... :dunno:

If I have a weapon that negates your advantage, no way do I let you know about it for free unless it wins me something big. Otherwise my investment in that weapon that took away your advantage is lost, as you will surely find a way to then negate my strength. just sayin....

We did a thread on the U.S. Navy a while ago. Pretty good one as I recall. It was pretty scary stuff. Basically, our Navy is shrinking. It's at the lowest number of craft since way back when. In the meantime, the Chinese are increasing their military spending by 1/3 each year.

We're relying on this bogus concept of "the thousand-ship navy." Where we have a smaller and smaller navy, but it's okay because we're sure all of the rest of the world would join in with us if we ever asked them too. (see: Coalition of the Willing).

This is one of the many hidden 'costs' of the War in Iraq that we're going to be paying for for generations. In the meantime, China's actually loaning us the money to GO to war in Iraq. Hell, works out great for them. Meanwhile, our interest payments pay them to create the kind of subs that can do what this one did. If this is the one they showed us, what the hell else is up their sleeve?

Scary Shiot.

One in a million shot. The US fleet probably just ran it over.

Prolly not. True story; A few years ago, the USN did a HUGE simulation. They brought in a retired USN Admiral to command the red force. He went totally old school. Didn't use radios - used manual methods to communicate. Didn't use GPS. Used old school tactics up to and including ramming boats. - Completely destroyed the blue force. It was such an embarasment to the USN, they wiped out all the results, sent the Admiral packing and re-started the simulation.

Scary shiot out there. The Chinese know that - especially with the USN, we are TOO gadget oriented. Think about it - everything we have is computerized and GPS dependent. If they take out our satelites (working on that now) and/or jam our electronics, we're stone-focked.

Thank your buddy Bill Clinton. The ONLY real cut he made in any budget was to the military. Look up the size of our military when he took office VS when he left. :pointstosky:

I'm pretty sure that a 400 billion + dollar a year budget should be plenty to secure our country. Maybe, it's the crazy contracts being awarded to buddies who build junk? Keep blaming Clinton for everything. He's only been out of office for 7 years. <_<

Dude was complaining about the Navy being smaller. I pointed out the FACT the only time our Navy, or any other branch of the Military, got smaller was under Clinton.....and that FACT deosn't change just because he has been out of office for 7 years.

If you have something that shows otherwise feel free to bring it.

So, we're both in agreement that awarding huge contracts to buddies who build junk is the primary problem. I'm glad we got this cleared up.

When Dum Dum dried up all the people in IRR, I worried his next step wouldn't be the 18 y/os it would be the prior service who's commitment had already expired. But he never reached that far. Now, every year makes me one more year older and drives me further and further from my military past.

I suspect being 36+ and having my IRR obligation now more than ten years expired and counting should be a pretty safe distance removed.

One war is enough. Thankfully Daddy Bush had a clue :pointstosky:

because I'd rather chop off my hand than salute the worthless cowardly son who's destroyed our nation.

Here's an interesting little quote for you RP. Not only is it NOT a "FACT" that the only time the Navy shrunk was under Clinton, but turns out....

President Bush's 2003 budget will shrink our fleet even further. He is asking for only $6.1 billion to buy U.S. Navy ships, significantly less than the $6.5 billion he requested in 2002, and a whopping $5 billion less than Clinton's request his last year in office.

Bush's reductions suggest a disturbing trend, both for national safety and for our shipbuilding industry.

The Department of Defense Joint Chiefs of Staff have told Congress we need 360 ships in order to meet all our obligations around the world. To maintain a fleet that size, we need to buy 12 ships a year. Bush's request will buy only five ships, a rate that puts us in line for a 180-ship fleet -- half what the Joint Chiefs of Staff say we need.

I've heard that story but what does it have to do with this Chinese sub?

I still don't think this sub was able to track down and penetrate the fleet. It likely detected the fleet heading it's way, sat silent and popped up when it was over run. Not that it is completely unworrying but it's still a lucky shot.

So you actually got to kill them/watch them die. Me, I was maintence support (3rd shop) for a front line unit. Always just behind the guys doing the killing, not actually participating. But I got the full carnage tour immediatly afterwards and also got to guard disarmed POWs who the combat guys dumped on us to temporarily before we sent them to whomever was ultimatly responsible. Box seats and some free souveneirs the REMFs never got.
