GettnHuge 2 Posted November 17, 2007 SARCASM, my gawd people, calm down. I am not an avid hunter, but, a lot of people in Michigan are, obviously no where near 70% though. Michigan sells more fishing liscene's than any other state(at least that is what i heard) at about 2.5 million, and that is still only about 20-25% of the population, and hunting liscenes are ALOT more.... When you add that all up, fishing licenses, hunting licenses, other fees, for all hunters everywhere, money that goes to the state's DNR for wildlife management, parks, protecting forests, natural resources, etc... and then compare that to how much $$ Environuts give to protecting the environment...well there's no comparison. I've butcher 9 this yr, 3 of mine plus 4 of one brother and 2 for my youngest brother. I butterfly the backstraps and take one roast from each hind 1/4 and the rest goes to sausage. Butcher bill kills me when you have him make sausage so I've started doing all my own. Once you get the proper equipment, it's rather easy....
Rattlesnake 0 Posted November 18, 2007 Sturgis. Fawn Riverright on the Indiana border I grew up not too far from there. I've never been a hunter, but many of my friends were, and they used to always head over that way.

swamp dog 0 Posted November 20, 2007 should have let the 4 point go. that is not a good deer. let it mature. spike bucks are not very smart and will wander straight to you. if you hunt for the meat--which is the main reason one should hunt--shoot the spike horn and the smaller buck. better eating. the deer hunt exists for culling the herd, not micro-managing the deer population into super bucks. the end. swamp dog 0 Posted November 20, 2007 Just behind the front shoulder RinKGo for the lungs and heart as marked on the target. If you shoot in in the chest or further back with a gutshot, it will likely run a bit. The one I hit didn't go far. Shooting at the head or neck is considered unsportsmanlike among hunters. Not cool at all. Shooting it in the rear happens sometimes if they jump or are moving, that ruins a good bit of meat. Follow the blood trail. I'm sure you can see how blood looks on the ground in the pics. neck shots are great shots. you don't fock up much meat and they drop right there. every neck shot i've ever made the deer dropped right in its tracks. it's not a shot that's my first option (lung/heart) but i'll take if it's there and is the best option at the time. without hesitation. the main drawback to a body shot is there's only a few inches between a quick kill and a gut shot. and if you do the latter you're in for a long focking day of tracking and the deer is going to suffer like hell. the last gut-shot deer i helped track took 7 hours to finally hunt down. not good for any of the parties involved. not to mention the mess when you cut them open. If the Michigan licenses weren't sex specific I'd be perfectly happy taking home 3 does. If I were hunting at home, I might pass on a young buck, but not on a trip where my dad already got his. While the racks on these aren't anything greta, the bodies were quite large. These deer were stuffing themselves with corn. The 4 point 'spike' I got was a porker. The pics were taken after the gut cut. The hides were very thick with fat, nothing puny about these two.

tubby_mcgee 702 Posted November 20, 2007 He shot the deer that was a few hundred yds (300) away? Is he a sniper or something? Deer are quite often shot at 300 yards away.

GettnHuge 2 Posted November 20, 2007 view str8 ahead Just started snowing as I got back into the blind. Off to the left it was thick and then a corn field. Nothin doin there. This is straight ahead, the grassy area is about 120yds away which is where I shot at the first doe and missed. Beyond that is a small slope up to another corn field. The deer funnel down from my right into the grassy area and up into the field. view to right. The buck stopped to look around about 5yds beyond and just to the right of the bigger tree in the picture. 20yds away at most. It was heading down the slope. Was gonna wait for it to go past those two trees into the open area but the shot was there. Doe was following behind. (like any good woman should) The small tree that's in your face basically in the first pic went up about 6/7 feet and spread out wide, some of the branches were draped over the blind. perfect cover. Had a huge tree behind me.

Boomer2 0 Posted November 20, 2007 Nice job. As was mentioned, hunters the means in which the DNR control the deer herds. I fault nobody for any deer taken legally, regardless of size. If its legal, you like it, shoot it. Most guys get out only during gun season so they will shoot the first deer, thats why many smaller deer are shot. I currently have 7 in the freezer. 2 Large bucks and 5 does. Trying to do my part in controlling the herd

Kinda like you busting someones balls when asking why "shot those puny things" Ummmm....not sure if you know this or not, but in my state, there are SEPARATE BOW AND RIFLE TAGS. I suppose I should have used my bow tag? LOL? Use your brain. I hunt every season. Bow. Rifle. Muzzleloader (when I get drawn). Apparently you are suggesting using bow for all three season. :notsmart: You shoot bow? What kind? I hope it's not a compound. Do you hunt geese/ducks/pheasants? I assume you use a .410, you know to make it more "sporting"/more of a challenge? (because that is what you were getting at about hunting deer with a rifle)

He shot them because they were legal to do so and he wanted to go home w/ a deer. Maybe there was sarcasm that I didn't catch, if so sorry..... I'm all for shooting big deer and regularly pass immature bucks but I have that luxury, I get out 20-30 time a season. Most gun hunter only have a 3-4 day season so they shoot the first thing they see. I'd probably do the same in their position. I guess I just don't care for the 'If you shoot small deer, I'm better than you' mentality I see alot.
