GettnHuge 2 Posted January 5, 2008 I still have an Ohio deer/buck tag left so every now and then I head out behind my parents house with the crossbow. They live on 28acres, much of it a field, but along the one edge is a woods with a creek and old trail through it. Some days we see some deer funnel through there, some days none at all. I keep going out there on the none-at-all days. So Friday afternoon despite it freezing out, I figgered what the hell I'll go down there for a couple hours. Get up in the stand about 3pm...few mins later off to the right about 50yds away in some brush I see a couple yearlings, prolly young does by the shape of their heads and necks. Then a few more come in, looked like about 7 in all. Still too far away and too much brush for an arrow. Few more mins and here comes this hyoooge 8 pointer. Definite call to the taxidermy man on this 2 focking hours that thing just hangs out over there while all the rest come as close as 20 feet from me. Had 2button bucks and 5does below me for about 20 mins without a clue . Finally it's about 5:30 and quitting time, the buck was wandering away from me but was at least out of the brush. Took a prayer of a shot at about 80yds and missed low. They all run off. Go into the house, get some food, pull out of the drive and sure enough in the darkness I can see all their shadows running around in the field again. Good! I'm going back out there in a half hour...and this afternoon. You do crazy things when you're in love. If I bag this focker mayhaps I'll take a pic with my cack in it's mouf! Just for you geeks. GettnHuge 2 Posted January 5, 2008 Woot! Got an 8 pointer. Will try to get a pic up later, stopped for lunch on the way to the meat market. It wasn't the monster I was hoping for...but I did see that same one again...and another one which was bigger! There were also two 6pointers a 4point and the two buttonbucks again. several does running around. This fella is the only decent buck to walk under my feet while the two monsters were off in the brush again. Figgered what the fock. I don't believe I've ever seen so many big bucks all in one small spot like that when I was hunting.

Be sure the cameraman is alert because the pic we want is the instant your cack is getting bit off, not before or after.

NorthernVike 2,087 Posted January 6, 2008 picI'd rather have his big brother, but...meh. I agree, a bigger one would be more fun but hey, good shot placement and the best part. A dead deer is a good deer What are you going to have him made up into? I kept just the chops and had the rest made into polish and breakfast sausage. Yummy

All I ordered was a dozen steaks and the rest made into 5lb salami sticks. I was out there again this morning but nothing in the vicinity. I kept my tag and we put a landowners tag on it, we have several. oh yeh, loin dinner tonite

NorthernVike 2,087 Posted January 7, 2008 Yeah, agreed, that's just stupid. Take a kill shot or don't take one at all. You would not like hunting with me and my group then. One day we were walking a trail and we heard a branch snap back in some realy deep cover. Well, all four of us oppen fire, I mean we let it rip, everyone reloads at least three times. After that we poked around to see if we hit anything but we could not find any sign. Sound shots are the best

GettnHuge 2 Posted January 7, 2008 Yeah, agreed, that's just stupid. Take a kill shot or don't take one at all. the focker was finally in an open spot and turned sideways at the moment. This is a crossbow we're talking about, the bolt had plenty of power and the blades would have still plunged into it easily. The bolt went below it's chest. If that's so weak maybe you can stand out there and let me try to hit you with it. Since of course it wouldn't kill ya. Sure, there is a quite a dropoff in accuracy after 60yds. Tho the scope on it has crosshairs for 20/40/60 and 80. I found the bolt yesterday buried well into a log.
