VH1's 100 greatest songs of the 90's

Recommended Posts

No NIN, Marilyn Manson, White Zombie.....

Agreed. I'd add Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots too. Was Dave Mathews on there?

So if VH1 does a top 100 comedians of the 2000's, you might be in the top 5? ;)

Also, no Eric Clapton (Tears in Heaven) or Aerosmith, or Jane's Addiction, or Violent Femmes?

Seriously, who makes these lists? Dumb focking suits!

Id wager two of our very own geeks, Naomi and Me_2006 attended 6-7 Backsreet Boys and Hansen concerts

Ice Ice baby should be higher up the chart :overhead: And its criminal that Hypnotize isnt even on the list

:nono:

I take offense to that. First concert I ever saw was the RHCP when I was 10.

Yes, One is easily one of the best of the 90's. U2 after Actung Baby is over-rated. But Actung Baby and before is outstanding. :music_guitarred:

Personally I think U2 jumped the shark after Rattle and Hum. Unforgettable Fire, Under a Blood Red Sky, and War were classics. Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum were good, but you could see the decline. The rest has sucked.

Also Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands ever. Smells Like Teen Spirit is always #1 in 90s lists because... well, it is the #1 song of the 90s dambit, it would be sacrilege to say otherwise.

I bet you were at least a closet mmmbopper on the school bus ride with your walkman :music_guitarred:

Maybe it wasnt a mainstream song, but the best song of the 90's was Pearl Jams Yellow Ledbetter

I dunno JK, with lyrics like this, it's kind of hard not to put them into the musical genius catagory.. :music_guitarred:

With the lights out its less dangerous

Here we are now

Entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now

Entertain us

A mulatto

An albino

A mosquito

My libido

Yea

Actually, was listening to Blackstreet's "No Diggity" on repeat ALL the time. Them, Kid Rock, RHCPs, Smashing Pumpkins and The Offspring were my bands at the time. Got into Eminem when he came out too. Old Puffy, Wu-Tang Clan, and Chris Rock's stuff were the majority of my "black entertainment" at the time. I've got an older brother that would have beat my ass if I listened to any of that boy band stuff.

ETA: Alice in Chains too. Though they scared me a bit.

Funny, I googled those exact lyrics this morning for the first time since... ever, just to see if I'm missing some lyrical genious. Because frankly I'm more into music than lyrics. Holy focking suck. So here is what we have:

01. Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit" -- most overrated evah

02. U2 "One" -- jumped the shark long ago

03. Backstreet Boys "I Want It That Way" -- sucks

04. Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You" -- sucks

05. Madonna "Vogue" -- meh... maybe

06. Sir Mix-A-Lot "Baby Got Back" -- cmon now

07. Britney Spears "...Baby One More Time" -- yippe... not

08. TLC"Waterfalls" -- what?

09. R.E.M. "Losing My Religion" -- close to shark jumping at this point.

10. Sinéad O'Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" -- grow some hair, and this song sucks

11. Pearl Jam "Jeremy" -- finally

I'll give you maybe on Vogue as a pop song. Maybe REM. Not until #11 is there a song really worth listening to.

Decade sucked. Sorry. :(

I think you guys are missing the point though. They're the songs that basically most define the decade, not the "best" songs. The songs with the most impact, etc. are at the top of the list.

Nirvana is number one because they basically killed hair metal and fueled the grunge thing, etc.

U2 is U2.

The Backstreet Boys were the top boy band phenomenon that ruled the second half of the 90s after grunge went back to Seattle.

Whitney Houston had an amazing voice, etc and that song was literally everywhere and in movies and junk.

Madonna is Madonna

you get the point, I think.

Yes, we get the point, but it is normal geek behavior to argue with something that we don't agree with. Like, for instance, Your mom. Personally, I've got no problems with her, but Kutulu and naomi both swear that she gave them the crabs :music_guitarred:

The list should have been named "Most influential songs of the 90's"

When they were big I considered myself a "skater girl" (skills only went as far as allying) wasn't into that type of music, and all the girls really crazy about them were a little younger. I thought Mark McGrath was cute and liked Greenday, Sublime and Blink 182 around then.

NO...you're missing the point. How do know which songs defined the 90's...you were still crawling around with a shiat filled diaper back then. When you have omissions like GNR...it's safe to say the whole list is shiit.

They should definitely be on the list, but I know enough about what was big when I was younger to say those top 5 songs were all pretty important. At least moreso than people in their 30's at the time.

How? From listening to the radio during your carpools to preschool? Seriously, I'm 29 and most geeks here are early 30's and I'd say listening to 90s music through high school and college might give a little more perspective than you're giving us credit for.

My brother's 29 and I imitated everything he did, watched, listened to, etc. I agree that you, and some of the others here around that age obviously know a ton about that time period (I assume you graduated in 97 or so). Given that, you should obviously know that the songs at the top had a huge influence on the music of the 90s. They weren't the best songs, I'll agree with you there. But they might have been the most important, which is what they probably meant in making the list.

What is the point in posting a VH1 list of anything? Among the many glaring faults (limiting any individual/act to a single song) they seemed to have decided "well, lets pick 2 country songs, a couple rap songs, a heavy metal song..that should instantly make our list valid among all musical styles!"

WTF, is this list serious? Did anyone else  after seeing this? Are these really the best songs of an entire decade? Overlooking that list, there are only a few select good songs...

02. U2 "One"

08. TLC"Waterfalls"

13. Dr. Dre (featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg) "Nuthin' but a "G" Thang"

16. MC Hammer "U Can't Touch This"

18. Metallica "Enter Sandman""

32. BLACKstreet "No Diggity"

37. Green Day "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)"

48. Matchbox Twenty "3 AM"

51. Tupac (featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman) "California Love"

57. Jay-Z featuring Amil and Ja Rule "Can I Get A..."

63. The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Mase & Puff Daddy "Mo Money Mo Problems"

77. Ice Cube "It Was a Good Day"

79. Meredith Brooks "B1tch"

There are a couple other OK songs, Mo Money Mo Problems at #63, especially considering what is above it, is focking rediculous. One is good, maybe top 50, certainly not top 2, One by Metallica is 100x better, i think that was an early 90s song. Before you call me gay for saying Waterfalls is a good song(actually a great song), i saw this music video when i was like 7 and it freaked me out and that song has always had like a permadent place in my head. Now when i listen to it, it is actually a very good song, that and b1tch are the only 2 female songs i like for the most part.

One by Metallica came out in 88, so not possible for this list. While you're welcome to your opinion on "Waterfalls" and "B1tch", I will have to disagree. IMHO, any list with those songs on it should die a horrible death.

What about MMMbop...in the top 20??? WTF?!?!? That has the be one of the worst songs ever to be released on popular radio. Like i said, those are pretty much the only 2 female-sung songs i like other than some country songs, Waterfalls actually has a very good story and message that goes along with it, it is sung pretty awfully, but, the lyrics to the song are very good which is suprising for TLC.

Yeah, i forget what album One was on, i knew it was either 88 or 92, i mixed them up. Certainly that would top the list, but, then again, i would think Enter Sandman would too.

Really?

Not to get all NewbieJr on you, but just what was wrong with the song?

Simple and cheesy obviously, but I guess it made an impression on you 'cause you remember it.

Good melody and harmonizing with the brothers.

They made their money off of it, so good for them
