I say he is a hero because he didnt land on my house and / or in my neighborhood.

Thanks Sully

Wow. Just read this thread. The word hero may be casually thrown around, but far too infrequently is it applied to those who are deserving. Similarly, the perception by some that he's not a hero, but he's "clutch" boggles the mind. "Clutch" is driving your team down the field to win the game; hitting a winning three-pointer as time expires; driving in an RBI in the bottom of the ninth. None of that BS is heroic in any way. Landing a focking airliner in a river with no power and not losing a soul? That is considerably more than "clutch".

And no, you don't have to die to be a hero.

Clutch:

1: made or done in a crucial situation

2: successful in a crucial situation

That is why we are calling him clutch. How many other pilots would not have been able to deal with the situation at hand and save everyone's life? He did not act in a heroic fashion. He reacted to the situation at hand. That is not heroic, but it sure as hell is clutch.

I really don't care that he is called hero since people who've done far less have been called the same. But in my opinion the word hero is so watered down these days.

Considering the word hero is thrown around all the time these days including a recent NBA ad I saw talking about seeing your "on the court heroes"--I am very comfortable calling him a hero.

Also, that audio tape of the cockpit exchange was hella cool. I listened to it like 10 times...especially the part where he says "were gonna be in the Hudson" at the end.

His actions were truly heroic. The one thing I have not been able to resolve is why he could not have avoided a flock of geese the size of a 737. Based on the report of him looking up and hearing the thud, my suspicion is that both Sully and the co-pilot were flying purely by instruments...not uncommon in this day of so many gauges. IMO, had either pilot been actually looking out the window, they would not have had to land in the Hudson.

Based on the report of him not actually being at the controls of the plane at that time...and the fact that despite your efforts, its not easy to maneuver a plane as quickly as you think. You just keep making yourself look as dooshish as posty when you bring this up.

Listened to it this morning again and they were talking about how every person on there was just calm and collected. 2-3 tower guys (at different airports) plus Sully...and not one of them was panicking at all.

If we are going to call ridiculously overpaid crybaby athletes "heroes," then your g0ddamn right that a guy who saves a ton of lives by pulling off an incredible feat qualifies as such.

This reminds me of that Chris Rock stand up bit.

You know the worst thing about black folk? Black folk always want credit for some shiot they supposed to do. A mofo will brag about some stuff a normal man just does. They will say some shiot like, "I take care of my kids." You're supposed to, you dumb motherfucker! What kind of ignorant crap is that? "I ain't never been to jail!" What do you want, a cookie?! You're not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having mutherfocker!

I swear that I pray you guys are just fishin. If anybody can't embrace what this guy has done as heroic doesn't understand the definition. I think firefighters, etc. are also great heros. I just think this guy is in that category and we need a hero right now. God Bless Sully.

Really, shouldn't the engineers that designed the plane to ACTUALLY be able to touch down in water .... shouldn't they be the heroes? If yer the pilot, what's your other option, "Awww .... screw it, we might as well go quick." and dive? WTF was the other option?

P.S. U.S. Air is like flying on a level LESS THAN COACH, just FYI.

For doing his job?

I guess the MSM needs some news to talk about since Bush is out of office and the can't talk ill-will of their Messiah...

If you were the pilot you would be screaming like a little bitch!

Posty (High pitched voice): "Help! Birds flew into the engines! We're going down!!!!"

Air Traffic Control: "Ma'am calm down, please put the pilot on the radio."

Posty: "I am the pilot! We're going down!!"

This thread/Posty = ;)

and a   for trying to sneak/link a "Messiah" line to it.
