GettnHuge 2 Posted March 24, 2009 http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4012307 1The Wedge on kickoffs....outlawed BULLCARP!! 2Lineup on kickoffs must be spaced way out. 3The third accepted proposal involves a play in which Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward made a block that resulted in a broken jaw for Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers. A 15-yard penalty will be enforced if a player delivers a blindside block to the head of a defender using his helmet, forearm or shoulder. The penalty will be enforced if a helmet, shoulder or forearm strikes the head or neck of the defender. any shot to the head should be against the rules already, accident or on purpose(mcgahee), unless the off player was putting his helmet down or being taken down 4The final change adds forearm and shoulder hits to protect defenseless receivers. In the past, officials gave an unnecessary roughness penalty to a defender if he delivered a helmet hit to a receiver going across the middle of the field or any spot on the field in which he appeared to be defenseless. Starting this fall, the penalty will also apply if the defender hits the defenseless receiver in the head or neck with his forearm or shoulder. uhh, isn't this also against the rules already? hitting someone in the helmet? Nope, the only times you werent allowed to hit the helmet was against a defenseless player. By definition that is in the act of throwing the ball, or just threw the ball. Or a WR that just caught the ball, but is yet to make a football move. All other times you are allowed to hit helmet to helmet.
Phurfur 70 Posted March 24, 2009 Eventually the NFL will be just like the NBA. They will change the game until it is not close to the game I followed my whole life and I will quit watching it.

Yippie Skippy 0 Posted March 25, 2009 I think that we'll see fewer kick-off TD returns and fewer onside kicks. If they were serious about head injuries they would mandate that players have to wear those big mouthpieces that some players use. Many players do not even use a mouthpiece at all, or they spit them out when they get tired. Mandate and enforce all four chin straps being buckled. Research and develop a safer football helmet than the same types that they've been using for 30 years. The military is light years ahead of the NFL in helmet protection. Start there. Don't make a new rule just because a Bengal has a weak jaw.

surferskin 30 Posted March 25, 2009 These rules are ridiculous. The only one that makes any sense is outlawing the forearm to heads of defenseless receivers. The Tom Brady rule? Give me a break. Yeah, because there aren't any rules that outlaw going after a QB's knees. The pussification continues.
Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted March 25, 2009 McGahee's situation is not impacted by the rule changes. McGahee is a ball-carrier and can be tackled the same way that he was before, so long as the player is not spearing. The rule change is for the Hines Ward situation where a blocker hits a defensive player from the blindside in the helmet or neck.
Steelers 1 0 Posted March 25, 2009 Eventually the NFL will be just like the NBA. They will change the game until it is not close to the game I followed my whole life and I will quit watching it. If Goodell and his cronies keep this up, they will lose me as a fan. College and High School football is now more manly than the NO FUN LEAGUE!!!!!! Sad day........why don't they put the players in skirts.....upgrade the helmet protection and leave the rules as is..............
Joey Gladstone 33 Posted March 26, 2009 Of course pvssies like Brad Childress and Lovie Smith were all giddy about these rule changes. That's part of the problem, too many queer coaches
NFLisGreat79 0 Posted March 26, 2009 All great changes in my opinion. Cracking a defenseless receiver in the head isnt football. Neither is a D lineman on his belly lunging forward to try to sack the QB at the knees. (That hit on Brady was illegal) If you dont like these new rules that protect the health of players, then YOU are a douche bag

I loved playing it when I was a kid and no one got hurt. I guess that makes you a douche bag
mgs316 14 Posted March 26, 2009 I see both sides of this argument: I think the player on ground cannot pursue is stupid. I do think guys have not been trying to tackle opposing players anymore, they are trying to cripple them. That is not what the game is about. You are talking about damaging someones quality of life. Blind siding a defenseless player and tryign to cripple them with your shoulder or forearm is not how the game should be played in my opinion. Keep your head up, hit them with your chest, and wrap them up with your arms...strip the ball if you can. Throwing your whole body into a guy that can't even protect himself is ridiculous. MMA fighters get hurt less severely than these football players.
Joey Gladstone 33 Posted March 26, 2009 Seriously...if they're going to hold these annual pVssification meetings to augment the game every single focking season, how about putting something into play to hold officials more accountable...you know for things like allowing a team to get a play off 5 seconds after the play clock expires, or reviewing a questionable, possible fumble at the end of regulation...you know big plays during tight playoff games. I'd like to see something done about these issues. Fock you Roger Goodell
