4th Round Commentary

Recommended Posts

So, will this be the historical "mixed" round, or will we see an unusual run on a specific position? Very odd year, so it might be a very odd round...

By the way, the draft is going very similarly (speedwise) to those in previous years. The 2nd day is always much more active than the 1st for some odd reason. Maybe it's just getting the drafting juices flowing?

I have Welker, Whosyourmomma, Marshall and TO in their own little tier, with Edwards and Roy Williams starting the next one. I was very happy when Falco took Edwards over Wes and TJ.

EDIT: Since Falco took Roy, I can name him.

Yes, it's been a mini-WR run. I would have Edwards in the tier with Marshall and TO and TJ, with Welker and Roy below. Just a personal preference, I suppose

A bit surprised to see Welker taken so high given that this is not a PPR draft.

The WRs are flying off the board now...

I understand what you are saying, but remember he was an 8 TD guy with Brady the year before/w 112 catches. I feel Brady brings his TD total up from 3 and closer to 8 again!!! I thought it was a pretty salty grab! Welker = Brady's blankie

Not surprised about the run on WR's at this point. I think everyone realizes that past the first several tiers of WR's, there's a significant drop off this year in the quality of wideouts.

yeah and this is why i knew i would fear picking manning early. go go go with the WRs, and ive yet to add a single one to my roster. i had hoped someone like edwards at least might fall that far, but i knew it'd never happen in this WR-early mock.

im surprised, that being said, that roy williams dropped as low as he did. i thought he'd have gone as early as the 2/3 turn. i wouldnt have taken him there, but i thought with all the hype of being dallas's guy, he would get mad love from someone.

I am very pleased that I was able to get Marshall before the mini-WR run. I agree all of them could be considered fairly equal, but I still believe Brandon has more skills, talent and motivation with either Orton/Simms than do the WRs taken after him. I took a wide receiver here because both owners behind me already had 2 RBs and I made the assumption they would not take a third (correct as it turned out-one advantage of being at the "turn"), so it would make sense to take a non-RB now.

As for Rogers.....yep....here is where the decisions make or break a team, and I had a decision here. Rogers (no other QB would I consider here) or another RB? I consider Rogers to be very close to Manning in expected points for the 2009 season, and for a 4th round selection-I thought very high value!

It will put me behind the proverbial 8-ball come running backs, but I believe I can find a productive starter in the next round, a serviceable starter. We shall see, I guess.

I had him in the next tier past the Big 3, so it doesn't surprise me that he's the 4th off the board.

Bush is a very difficult guy to get a value read on right now. Depending on who you listen to, he's either due for an expanded role this year or a vastly diminished one that includes primarily return duties.

Might give him a look in a PPR league, but in this format, I'm wary.

I'm not concerned about his production if he can stay healthy. They will use him in a big way, if available. It might be predominantly out in space with a pass, or we might even see some wildcat out of this cat, but he has got to be able to play all 16. I agree that the formula changes for him in ppr, and that it would have been a hard trigger to pull.

Bush is one of those guy I just can't pick. He can't stay healthy, and his numbers are average at best. He's a great pass catcher for a running back, but he also averages only 140 carries per year. In a non PPR, he just isn't worth an early pick.

:dunno: Just needed to finish up some work, I'll be picking in a few minutes.... once again, great drafting by the rest of you has left me with another tough decision

I had him 4th, behind the big three with two others in his tier. I had him 4/5 corner guy, so this isn't way out there in my estimation.

....and, if I didn't get my QB now, my thinking was there is not a "top" guy available 18 picks from now at that position. One of the "issues" with being close to the turn!

I was deciding between VJax and (_____). But the more I looked into his stats over the last few seasons and what might be available at my next pick Jackson made sense. He's consistently progressed the last 3 season (along with Rivers) and finished 13th best WR. Ahead of a handful that were already selected (Wayne, Bowe, Welker, Housh, Colston, Edwards), surprising huh. He's officially listed as the #2 WR for SD but Chambers seems to be a forgeten man now. SD has a good offense and with VJax height he's a great redzone target. Perfect for this format. I have him on the same tier with Roy and Braylon.

Yeah, the pecking order in San Diego with respect to WRs is still a bit fuzzy, but I'd say he's the clear cut guy to go with there as of now.

My only question is who drew the double coverage last year??? Who will draw it this year? I didn't see this pick coming, and don't disagree with it based on last year. I just don't know if we can formulate the true go to guy for this year from it.

True. The go-to-guy in San Diego could in reality be Brandon Manumaleuna.

With a healthy (____) at TE, a healthy LT and an up and coming WR3 I don't think defenses will be able to double-cover Jackson.

e-mail sent to the King.

I had Vincent Jackson next on my list of wideouts, but I haven't entirely been comfortable with where I put him. Anyone else think that he might have been available in the 5th round?

Just wondering if everyone else has him similarly valued.

I had a few other non-WR players ranked higher overall than Jackson that were available, and the mini-WR run probably forced my hand a bit, but I'd be surprised if he made it to the 5th. He certainly wasn't going to make it back to me at 5.08 and I had the drop in WR greater than that of other positions between these two picks.

I have VJax pegged as a 4th/5th turn kinda receiver...so where he was taken in this draft isn't significantly out of whack. In addition if this was the guy he really wanted there is little doubt in my mind he would have been gone by the next round.

IMO he was clearly the best receiver left on the board. Not a bad pick at all and I buy the logic behind the pick.

So, I decided to take my first "risk" of the draft...and you guys know I'm pretty risk adverse.

Any thought on the rookie? Too soon?

Like him...alot. Nice pick. I was literally torn between him and Pierre Thomas so you made my decision easy. I'm a big fan of Pierre Thomas for this upcoming year as well.

No way...it's not too soon. That's a great pick. The Lynch pick was solid, too. Both could end up top ten at the position. At least (in Lynch's case) top ten in points per week.

I had Fumble pegged to grab him even though he had two backs in the fold. he never worries about wideouts and still pulls a team together in the end.

I had Thomas, Lynch & Moreno as the next 3 in line for my selection and had I not gone Rogers, one of them would have been mine.

Jackson-my preference would have been in the 5th, but like I did once already in this draft....if you want a guy and he won't be available for your next pick----GO GET HIM!!!

Thomas will out perform Bush in this format.

Not "too soon", but I have 2 simple words:

Denver. Clusterfock.

I've never been a huge fan of taking Denver RBs, and early picks nearly never work out. Yes, I know, new coach, the Rat is out of Denver, but I still don't see it being worth the risk.
