Why is Dez Bryant better than Julio Jones this year?

Recommended Posts

Some Rotoworld quotes from this offseason about Julio:

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff believes Julio Jones will be the "1-A" to Roddy White's No. 1 receiver from "Day One."

Dimitroff describes Jones as "very, very focused and very, very competitive," already earning the respect of the Falcons' veteran leaders. The on-field results have been just as impressive. The Rotoworld Draft Guide ranks Jones as a top-30 fantasy receiver this season while Bodog.com lists him as the favorite for Rookie of the Year honors. Aug 25 - 3:51 PM

Roddy White confirms that Julio Jones has "done a great job picking up the offense" in Atlanta.

"He's so explosive, so big, fast and strong," White said. "He does a lot of things naturally. You don't have to teach guys like that to play football. ... They get acclimated real fast and they go." We've seen speculation that Jones could start slowly while learning the ropes, but he had the playbook all offseason while working on timing with Matt Ryan. His ADP has climbed a full round to the late sixth since training camp opened. Aug 19 - 12:35 AM

Julio Jones caught two of his four targets for 43 yards and added one rush for 12 yards against the Dolphins in Friday's preseason opener.

Jones stole the show in three series, highlighted by top-end NFL explosiveness after the catch on a 21-yard drag route. He added another 22-yard reception and was showcased on a reverse to boot. The starters didn't even play a full quarter, but the No. 6 overall pick was everything he was billed to be and more. Jones' game-breaking ability will help the Falcons passing offense reach the next level this year. Aug 12 - 8:23 PM

According to NFL Network's Mike Mayock -- who's live in Flowery Branch -- No. 6 overall pick Julio Jones "may already be the most impressive player" at Falcons training camp.

Mayock described Jones as "more explosive off the ball than they thought." There's no question that Jones is being counted on as the No. 2 passing game option in Atlanta, and it'd be especially beneficial to his fantasy value if the Falcons opened up their offense. Michael Turner is slowing down and coming off groin surgery, so it makes sense for the Falcons to throw more. Aug 1 - 12:31 PM

Rookie Julio Jones has reportedly impressed veteran teammates with his "precise route-running and attention to detail" even more than his explosiveness in recent workouts.

For fantasy leaguers, the worst part about losing OTAs and minicamps is missing out on rookie updates. We don't want to overstate the importance of players-only workouts, but Jones is the one NFL rookie consistently garnering effusive praise from teammates -- for his maturity as well as his talent. We have little doubt that the sixth overall pick will step in immediately as Matt Ryan's No. 2 target.

Julio Jones has been spending extra time with Matt Ryan at the quarterback's suburban Atlanta home.

Ryan has taken Jones under his wing over the last two months, helping him with the playbook and working on timing. With the offseason program gone, it's vital to Jones' potential impact as a rookie. He'll be the No. 2 wide receiver and should quickly pass Tony Gonzalez as the No. 2 option in the passing game.

Pro Football Weekly has spoken with team sources that say Falcons' first-round pick Julio Jones has looked "way ahead of the game" at player-organized workouts.

Jones has reportedly already developed a nice rapport with Matt Ryan, and "been accepting of Ryan's coaching." Jones sounds far ahead of where many other rookies are this offseason, which is quite encouraging for a Falcons team that gambled he could help them right away.

Roddy White confirms the Falcons plan a more aggressive aerial attack with the offense running through Matt Ryan this season.

Explosive plays and mismatches are the buzz words in Falcons camp after learning from the Saints and Packers the past two seasons that a ball control style only carries an offense so far. Credit goes to NFL Films guru Greg Cosell for predicting as much after the Falcons traded up 21 spots for Julio Jones, who will be "force fed the ball because of his explosiveness." With healthy slot receiver Harry Douglas also "lying in the weeds" for a breakout, Ryan is a darkhorse candidate to lead the NFL in TD passes.

when it comes to the production of secondary receivers, production of the QB is the only salient metric. you can quibble, or you can offer murky prognostications that "mebbe this season will be better", but that's just empty talk.

barring injuries to both parties, ryan's ceiling might make it up to romo's floor. if i'm wrong, bump the thread and i'll eat crow.

And again...I stated Dez would be better...but I don't think Romo is the better QB of the two.

Im not saying he won't have better fantasy stats...Im saying, as an NFL QB, I think Ryan is better.

Dez Bryant has a year of experience under his belt. He has had a chance to become comfortable with his team's offense and adjust to the NFL style of play. Julio Jones has not. And that makes an even bigger difference this year since the off-season was very short.

was encouraged julio had a decent debut in an otherwise awful day for the falcons passing game. considering julio was a late round flyer in most drafts his value should remain excellent all year.

Dez did most of his damage on Cromartie I believe...and one big play out of the slot with an LB trailing him.

^this, but to be fair, he hurt his quad early and Revis was covering him when he was less than 100%...just sayin'...
