What late round upside TE is most likely to have a huge game week 1?

Recommended Posts

I like Pettigrew as a top 10 TE, but I don't see him breaking out per se. We sort of know what he is going to bring.

I do like the Fred Davis, Greg Olsen, and Jared Cook mentions. Davis simply by having RGIII there can possibly boom him up if it pans out. With Shockey gone, and the offense they run in Carolina Olsen should be a focal point and big target for Newton. Love him this season. And Cook is a beast, who showed promise in flashes last year.

Gresham is interesting, but Bengals are run first and Dalton simply doesn't pass all that much. I like Gresham (and own him) but while he may be top 10, I don't see a huge breakout if you will.

I am banking on Rudolph. I need Rudolph to go off so I can trade him with Bowe for an upgrade over Bowe. I like Cook this week.

Davis

I should have thrown him in there as well just because he's not yet considered elite and could be that this year, but I wouldn't consider him a late round pick.

These are the two I have to decide between. I think Cook can break one at any time, but I think Rudolph will get a lot of looks and could have a monster multi-TD game.

Wanting to keep my rbs/wrs I dropped Cook/Gresham in one league and went with Olsen, who I perceive as the safest bet of the 3. He was targeted a lot in the preseason. Shockey's gone. Smith isn't totally healthy. Stewart, pass catching RB isn't totally healthy. I can make a good case for him.

Cook I can see going both ways. He doesn't play all snaps from what I've heard, if someone can elaborate more I'm like to know how many, and while in theory I can see Locker scrambling hitting him for big gains maybe that's moreso Washington-his favorite target last year- and Wright, who's had a great pre season and seems to have a very high football IQ.

Most of Cooks big games came with Hassle at the helm late last year and Britt out. I just don't know if that's the same situation as Locker + Wright. (This doesn't even factor in adding Britt to the mix at some point) Maybe it's better though.

Another thing is that everyone keeps saying he's gonna be a great redzone target. Looking over Doug's red zone report he had 6 targets and caught 1. That's a terribly low number and an awful percentage. Shockey/Olsen had 11 +7 (catching 8) Fred Davis only had 8 but caught 7. Heck Tenn's other TE Craig Stevens caught his only 2 redzone targets. Stevens 2 Cook 1

I just don't know enough about Cook as a player and don't totally have clarity on the situation either. Someone sell me on Cook.

The reason I am trying to figure Cook out is that I'm debating O. Daniels/Cook for the week in another and again I'm probably gonna have to drop one. It's a 14 team league so I might not get them back. And trust me whoever I drop...will blow up. That or I keep both and drop A. Morris....who is probably worth squat but I'm waiting on Matthews and am currently relying on Dwill/Jennings as a stop gap.

This is how I'm beginning to feel. He's an every down tight end and will be one of Ponder's two clear primary targets. He might have the best chance for a multi-TD day.

P.S. I'm really happy I have Graham in one league and can hopefully just have TE on autpilot all year. My most difficult and seconded guessed decisions all year with be this tier 1/2 tes.

From what I understand, Carolina wants more passing from Cam. While he seems to have rejuvinated Steve Smiffs career, Steve Smiff is getting old. Randy Moss and T.O. were both better in their prime. I think his numbers drop a lot this year.

But ... I thought Cam was supposed to be passing more? And who is going to be his easiest target to find? That's right ... D-Will.

I would like to know more about Cook's snap count as well and worry he'll be inconsistent because of concerns you mentioned.

If he gets a long TD he'll score a lot in my league's system but I still don't think I can bring myself to start him over Rudolph.

I can give you some insight on the Giants situation. I imagine some people will look to pick up Bennet. He could get like 4 TDs all year ... already had 1. There's also:

Bear Pascoe

Yeah, same guy that played in the Superbowl against New England when all the Giants TE's were hurt. "Make 'em go to Pascoe, make 'em go to Manningham." famous words from Bellicheat before Maningham made that amazing catch. Pascoe remains on the team. He does his job. You gotta love a guy named Bear.

Travis Beckum

On PUP. This guy fit the mold the Giants wanted. Everytime he's been poised to breakout he's been hurt. It's hard to imagine that the Giants are holding on to him at this point unless they believe he can be YUGE someday. They must see something special in the kid because he hasn't been as good as he was expected to be.

Adrien Robinson

ADRIEN! No, seriously though ... I don't know who this guy is. Apparently though, besides the guys I mentioned, he's the only other TE on the team.

Bennet did look good though. That was a great catch he made for the TD. He could be in for a big year if he keeps making catches like that.

Tony Gonzalez should be pretty motivated to play against his old team in KC. You have to think he's been harping on Ryan to get him the ball... i think he was a bargain this year, but apparently so did everyone else, so i didn't get him in any league :dunno:

I like gresham this week. FWIW.

Baltimore will try to take away AJ. I'm not sold on BJGE & nothing to report at WR2. I also think Cincinnati will be playing catch up most of the game.

Here is what I have learned about Cook:

1- Needs to improve his blocking: most of the Titans' plays are run out of a single TE set, which requires an in-line TE capable of blocking

2- Needs to improve his route running: this has been a major knock on him; many of his big plays the last 2 seasons came from break downs/ad lib type plays

This seems to be a make-or-break year for him, with Taylor Thompson breathing down his neck for playing time.

I'm not trying to talk you into or out of Cook, just sharing information. Personally, I would take Cook over Daniels, as the Texans are running a lot of 3-TE sets and I expect Daniels to lose opportunities to Garrett Graham (not to mention his ongoing injury issues).

Good info Patmos.

Silvia had this to share in his week 1 outlook:

'Cook is a Jermichael Finley-type talent who can really run at 6-foot-5, 248, but I'm in wait-and-see mode on his fantasy value after he let me down last season. Cook needs to raise his snap count by blocking better. He was a part-time tight end last season, playing fewer snaps than blocking specialist Stevens. '

'Rising third-year TE Garrett Graham and fullback/tight end hybrid James Casey, the Texans' version of Aaron Hernandez, will both cut into Owen Daniels' receiving looks. '

Trying to decide between Cook, Olsen, and Celek.

I guess I feel that Celek is out for sure, I just don't think he gets enough looks in that offense.

Between Olsen and Cook I like Cook's explosiveness and ability to have some real big games depending on his role, but am a little bit gunshy about rolling with him as my lone TE. Olsen on the other hand just feels safe, but potentially so low-upside as to eliminate any real 'safety'.

Thoughts? Is Olsen worth starting with Shockey gone? Or am I better off hoping Cook puts it together?

Based on Cook's 6 redzone targets last year...I really don't understand why this is ESPN's player blurb for him.

'A popular sleeper pick this offseason, Cook ended his third NFL season with a flourish, catching 21 passes for 335 yards in his final three games of the 2011 campaign. He is building a rapport with Jake Locker and will be targeted more frequently than any other Titans player in the red zone.'

Since I dropped Cook I fully expect him to explode but Olsen over Cook was the decision I made.

I only wanted to carry 1 TE and Olsen just felt like a safer option.

Cook and Rudolph have the best chance for a blowup this week, I think. Jacksonville's LB corps is pretty weak and if they single Rudolph up on someone other than Poz, he could be open all day.

Cook's my guy in a couple leagues, but I don't really know how he's going to go this season with Britt back and Wright in place. His big moments last year were on big pass plays, which one would think would shift more to the WRs at this point. I think he has a good chance of being Locker's safety valve, but this week and next should give us a good handle on him.

I agree that Olsen is the safest option, if you're looking at all three. While I'm not convinced Olsen will ever have the true breakout year people have been expecting from him since he came into the league, he should be rock solid for 6+ targets. I think LaFell has a good season, though, and hampers his overall upside a bit on the year.

The correct answer would be...Pitta!

I know they have Dixon but I really like the guy. Smart player with great hands. I think he can emerge as consistent weekly option, especially with Boldin on the slow decline and the Ravens opening up the offense.

P.S. Pitta scored a TD in 4 of the Ravens last 8 games in 2011. He has 5 in his last 9.

You ever sit on a wet foam ball? Sounds kinda like "GRESHAM" against my shorts.

I've heard it more than once now, from some noisey shorts in the hot tub.

Yes sir. I picked him up already.

I believe in what this spongey ball is trying to tell me.

Go with Gresham.

I drafted Olsen and am sticking by him. Being 7th on the waiver wire I'm assuming I'll miss out on Alfred Morris, so I'm looking to add a backup TE to my final roster spot. In a 10 team league I have claims on (in order)

Coby Fleener

Martellus Bennett

Pitta

Don't want to over react but is K. Davis going to be invisible all season with Marshall, Jeffries, Bennett and Forte?

1 target for 0 yards...seems droppable.

Who do you guys like this week? So many TE's...

Crazy all these guys are on my wire:

Rudolph/Fleener/Olsen/Gresham/Olsen/Keller/Pitta

I'm thinking of rolling with Rudolph for the week. I want to trust Pitta but I'm not sure I can...

Who do you guys like?

I know Philly used to be awful against the TE, which would make Pitta a solid start. Is that still the case? Has the addition of Ryans at LB firmed them up at all?
