Manti Te'o's girlfriend death hoax

Recommended Posts

He knew dec. 26th -- the Heisman had already been handed out. He told the school as soon as he learned about it. If this is anyone's fault it's the school itself -- show me a link when he says anythign about fake girl friend without being directly asked about it? -- He was just keeping up the story like he was likely TOLD to do.

They were going to come out with it anyway AFTER the Title game.

No, Manti learned of the hoax on December 6. He didn't tell ND until December 26. Meanwhile he was giving interviews talking about what an inspiration his dead girlfriend was.

Nope...that's incorrect. ESPN reported that Manti found out on December 6th, when he received a phone call from the "dead" girlfriend. He didn't tell ND officials about it until a few weeks later on December 26th. So Manti definitely knew about it before the Heisman presentation on December 8th; and both he and ND knew about it before the BCS game on January 7th. Yet they continued to discuss it in interviews with reporters.

Here's the link: Discovery of Hoax

As the article points out, he had several interviews in which he talked about Kekua after he knew that she didn't exist -- most notably with his Heisman ceremony interview with ESPN's Chris Fowler. That happened before ND knew that it was a hoax, so continuing to perpetuate the hoax falls on him in that instance and not on the school. (ND is more culpable for the interviews that happened at the BCS game, after they knew about the hoax -- where, again, they should've prohibited certain questions from being asked of their players.)

:dunno:

Tell me, do linebackers pass a wonderlic test like the QB's.

If so Teo will probably get a -5 , if he is not involved

he is as dumb as a rock.

The fact that this has garnered as much coverage as it has is disappointing. Dude had an internet girlfriend. Didn't work out. Big deal.

Move along - nothing to see here.

This has DOMINATED cable sports news the past couple days. It's pushed Lance freaking Armstrong to an afterthought.

And it would only register as a somewhat amusing episode of that Catfish show on MTV.

I would generally agree with you guys, and I'm disgusted by mainstream media, sports or otherwise, more than anyone else. However, there are some serious angles to this. 1 they're saying it might have been to aid the Heisman bid. I think that's stupid anyway because his body of work should dictate the heisman bid, not anything else, but you know how that goes. More importantly, however, there was a bunch of money raised via charities that popped up and what not based on this story. Most likely none of that was a scam, but I think the story warrants some coverage. The level it's receiving, who knows. Probably not, but that's the sad state of our media these days, they'll latch onto anything to get a few days out of it. Regardless, this is more than just him having an internet gf that was a scam. The truth needs to come out, and it will. The ugly means in which it will come out is a whole different conversation...
