Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 There's been some discussion here on this subject before. I submit for your consideration, Devo, Gut Feeling. Not normally what someone would come up with in a top 10 even, but I think it is top 3 and deserves consideration for number 1. It's very rare that, even a Devo cover band, would cover this song because it is so difficult to play live. I hear, some band somewhere does do a cover of this song and kudos to them, if they do a halfway decent job. You actually need to be talented to pull this off:
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 And yet ... never heard on the radio. Even if you call and request Devo ... they play something else. I think top 3 are maybe, Gut Feeling, Devo - Gimme Shelter, The Rolling Stones and I am The Walrus, The Beatles, although I really would like to shoe in some Pink Floyd there. Top 5 for sure, wait for it .... half the song is almost silence.
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 I often fantasize that I can sing like Roger Waters. I imagine David Gilmore feels the same way. I'm not bad. Like, if I could get a few guys together that wanted to do a Pink Floyd tribute band ... there's a few songs I can sing pretty decently. And of course, there is one song in particular that is chalenging to me as a vocalist. Power vocals ... Really gotta project, but if you want to learn to sing ... beyond Sound Garden, Black Days ... which I still can't sing after years of practice ... this is the song, you want to be able to sing:
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 A good song is kinda like a good golf course. Impossible to play perfectly. Time, which I have spent many years practicing, is particularly difficult because of the transition of perfctly timed power "Ticking away" with that smooth "time is lying in the sunshine" ... and if you can actually follow that song, and boom it out when you supposed to, and sing it soft with no transition ... that takes practice and skill. Now here's one ... Maybe 10 on my list. What you hafta know, while you are hearing it, is that it's a white man, singing this. I can do a little this too, I can throw a growel into it ... not sure if that's just something I was born with, or because I been smoking for 20 years. Took me awhile to develop. If you can growl like this, sing smooth like Roger Waters, than you are the only other person on the planet besides me that has practiced this shiat.
drobeski 3,061 Posted January 17, 2015 Nope, pop/punk isn't rock and roll. Stones, Sympathy for the Devil live.
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 Sympathy for the Devil over Gimme Shelter?
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 Devo is not pop, or punk.
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 In my top 10. They used an old Casio drum mix. Remember the old Casio piano with the built in drum mix? That's what makes it top 10 for me. Not rock and roll?
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 Also in my top 10 ... Rock and roll?
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 I think you have to include punk/pop if you include heavy metal. While Soul, R and B, Blues and the predecessor to them all, Jazz are NOT rock and roll, punk rock, just like heavy metal falls under the umbrella of rock and roll. Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 But lets be realistic. We agree that it could be a Rolling Stones song. Viable best rock and roll song ever. But we disagree with the scope. So, for the sake of argument, can we agree to include punk, alt, etc. Duran Duran is rock and roll. The Circle Jerks are rock and roll. Wide net.
Giants Fan 85 Posted January 17, 2015 Ok, so if like having the 2nd pick in the draft in ff, the Stones have been picked, who is arguably top 5. Stones, Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zepelin ... Pretty easy consesus for the top 4. Who's fifth?
NEWPOSTERGUY! 288 Posted January 17, 2015 "Gates of Steel" is the greatest Devo song. "Sister Morphine" is the greatest Stones song. hth

NEWPOSTERGUY! 288 Posted January 17, 2015 -i appreciate all that the Velvets accomplished ... most notably being a raw and edgy alternative to all the peace/love/dope hippie sh it that was so dominant at that time. the Doors could've been just as visceral, but their mellow west coast sensibilities undermined the danger Jim represented. fockin hippie crap ruined what might have been ... for shame. NEWPOSTERGUY! 288 Posted January 17, 2015 Just learned the other day that bowie wrote that song for mott when he heard they were close to breaking up. yeah, he initially offered "Suffragette City", but Ian Hunter held out for "Dudes" ... catapulted them to top dog status for a few years in the mid-70's ... matter of fact, it was Mott who were the first rock band to headline a bill on Broadway (the track i posted is from those shows at the Uris theater) ... Queen was their opening act.
