Cdub100 3,390 Posted January 8, 2019 It isn't a gambling destination unless you are an old who comes on a tour bus. Pros: affordable (compared to Bay Area, Seattle, Portland); Tahoe is just up the hill if you enjoy skiing, hiking, biking, boating; moderate 4 seasons; quality restaurants and nightlife because of the casinos; it lives up to the "biggest little city" moniker in that it feels like a much smaller town; chip on the shoulder vibe ("Reno sucks compared to Vegas" that unites the community; easy airport with reasonable flights all over the west; people are generally laid back compared to CA, Vegas; solid economy with lots of tech companies migrating from Bay Area; 4 hour drive to Bay Area if you want a weekend in a major metro; no state income tax; casinos are always open if you want to dabble; college vibe since UNR is the only game in town; not bad traffic Cons: housing still expensive compared to Phoenix and TX; can be a little boring; not much of a beer scene; not as hip as Boise, Denver, Austin; some of the locals have that trashy/meth vibe. It isn't the greatest city out west but I spent some time there a decade ago and the people were friendly, the surrounding area was beautiful, the economy was growing, and it was affordable compared to the region (CA, PNW). It would not be at the top of my list but it is worth a look for someone interested in a 3rd tier city. I find the whole town sad.

Super Cubs 132 Posted January 8, 2019 Wife has been digging on Texas lately... we're looking for someplace not to damned hot (no El Paso desert) and no swampy mosquitos so I guess no really far east Texas from what I've heard. This is future... say 5-7 years down the road we're looking at. Where to live? We don't mind suburban living, but small town isn't bad as long as its say an hour or twos drive from civilization. Looking at some small towns south of College Station... super affordable... but why? Wife is hispanic so that demographic isn't a deturrant. Places of color don't bother us... but let's not get out of hand... What say ya'll? I live south of College Station where is this super affordable land you are talking about? South of College Station you will only get surface rights no minerals. That's all oil land.
SenatorRock 708 Posted January 8, 2019 honestly, if I could retire to any town Flagstaff would be my choice Somehow Flagstaff has stayed under the radar for the most part. College kids, pro/semi-pro endurance athletes, and locals. Great beer, tons of hiking/biking trails all through town, San Francisco Peaks looming, Grand Canyon, Sedona, Bryce, Escalante all a short day trip away. And Phoenix is just over 2 hours away for big city . If I could work remote Flag would be a top contender.
