Home Gym Equipment

Recommended Posts

Some brands/equip I've been using for years:

1. Powertec full rack with pulley system, dip bars, pull-up bar. The newer models are amazing, lots of attachments but they don't work on mine.

2. Powetec back ext machine. Also use to isolate bicep bar curls.

3. Powerbloc. each adjustable 5-90lbs. Love these things. Good fit in hands and space saving but high dollar!  I want the stand but out of stock.

4. Treadmill, somebody gave it to me. Fine but want the one the NFL uses, Woodway but they are expensive as fvck. A used one about 5K.

I can probably fit one more thing in my gym. Leaning towards a dedicated rower. There is this one that uses actual water,  Mr Rudolph Rowers. Reviews are good. Likely Christmas splurge.

Most of the equip I did not technically purchase. For a while, the Guard had a program where if you recruited someone you get a bonus. I used it to buy the rack and back ext, free weights, other items. It was a good investment. Still using all of it.

My new house will have a room that will be my gym. I'm thinking I'll need a power rack and a bench.

It'll also have my treadmill and bike along with a punching bag.

Could use a recommendation on a power rack.

Check out Powetec. The new ones, lots of attachments and pretty much commercial grade equip. They are extremely back ordered though with the virus.

I went all out on my gym remodel. Even the ac ducts are the large metal tubes like a real gym. Sounds stupid but I show people and they like it. It makes you want to workout. I also have Sirius and Amazon music with wireless speakers, large TV, hard wired remote wall fan, mini fridge, built in cubbies. Pretty much no exercise I can't do but that rope exercise but even most gyms can't do that. Need a lot of sqft.

My youngest has been sitting on his ass for most of the pandemic. Just started working about a month ago. I have been telling him that he needs to get in shape for football season since about January and he has done very little. Last week, he asks if he can get a bench for the basement. I told him that he is about 6 months late because home gym equipment is in short supply because of all of the gyms being closed. He didn't quite understand. :shocking:

My basement has a lot of crap.  Gotta tell ya, I can't even remember what kinds, it's a mishmash of sorts.  Almost all of it is the gf's... and I'm not allowed to use it, LOL.  She has some sponsorship deals with gyms, fitness clubs, and weight equipment companies.  With the gyms and fitness clubs, (places like Curves and Planet Fitness), get new equipment, they ask her (and others, if they want some of the old equipment), so she takes it.  Same with companies... one is Precor, I know that, but I can't remember the other two.  Anyway, we have something like $20k worth of stuff down there.  The only things I'm allowed to use are the dumbbells.  :dunno:  Contractually, only she's covered (liability reasons), to use them.  I asked if I could take a picture and upload our basement, but she said no.  Women!

I have the bow flex adjustable dumbbells.  I really like them.  I've heard good things about the Powerbloc's too.

The thing about equipment is that you don't have to overdo it.  A dumbbell set that you can buy at Dicks for like $50 to $75 is more than enough for a lot of people.  There are some many different exercises for your whole body that you can do with dumbbell's.  Spend a couple of bucks on a bench and some attachments and you can practically have about 75% of what a gym will offer you for like $250.  Walking is enough for people, in general.  Jogging as well.  Something you can do instead of jogging, is just walk with light ankle and wrist weights.  You don't need much more than 10 to 15 pounds (total).

Elliptical machines are truly great.  They're the only real equipment I'd suggest buying.  The thing is, you do get what you pay for with those things.  Honestly, I've never seen a good one be less than $1k.  If you have the money, go out and get one.  You'll love it.  If you need more than this machine and dumbbells, I'd recommend going to a gym.  Membership's these days really aren't all that expensive.  Before my gf and I got our place, I only had (and still only have), a TDS Hex Dumbbell set that I got from the gym I worked at, and a bench.  Got them for $500.  The dumbbell set is from 5 to 110 lbs.  Most people don't need weights in that range or a set that good.

I here you. Some of the best athletes never used weights. Jerry Rice, Hershel Walker, Walter Payton. I will say though, I do indeed like my home gym. I dumped a lot of coin in it, 30K at least but it's worth it. Even my wife who never liked exercise is really into it. She meets up online with her friends who also were not into it but now they are like a crew.

There's nothing wrong with it if you're into it and you're going to use it.  You are and do.  That's money well spent in my opinion.  I just think there's a lot of people who think they need a lot more than they do.  The "average" person needs nothing more than a few things for convenience.  I really only use the dumbbells to keep tone because I'm in really good shape.  When I go to the gym or I'm at work, I'll use some of the machines to target specific muscle groups or the expensive cardio equipment.  I don't need those at home like my girlfriend does.

I don't think Mike Tyson used weights either. I was looking at his old school workout routine. Just insane. I think pushups alone he was doing 1200 a day a something stupid.
