When they retired, they'd spend five bucks a week or whatever buying Lotto tickets. They knew the odds but for the price of a cup of coffee they had a moment of hope. The distraction from the fact that they were slowly and mercilessly and inevitably dying. And it broke up the week and gave them something to look forward to. I think if they had won the lottery, they wouldn't have changed their life so very much. But it was something. And for most of us jerks here who spend an average of probably a hundred bucks a week on booze? - just have something to look forward to after the end of a long day or a long week? A reward, a distraction. Whatever you want to call it. - to criticize people or call them stupid for spending a few bucks for a little bit of hope, a fantasy, a distraction. The fock man. That's the same way I can't really bring myself to criticize some f***** on the street for drinking a tall boy. At the end of the day, all of it is just a distraction from the fact that life kind of sucks. Wonderful people get raped and murdered. Children get cancer. get rich. But guess what? They all die. Life's a losing proposition. A sucker's bet. It doesn't matter how smart or how rich you are. At least Some people win the lottery. Nobody wins life. I don't think the concern is a stable couple with advanced degrees dropping $5 a week on them. I'll buy 5 tickets when it gets high; I'd have done it this time if I knew about it. Also $100, pfft, I just ordered $200 worth of booze from Total Wine to pick up tomorrow.

The thing that gets me is the people standing in line calling it a tax on the stupid are standing in the same line to buy cigarettes.
