Doesn’t need to be any argument. It’s different for everyone and why golf is such a mental game. 
Yes, for me a 5 foot clean up after a chip or bunker shot is easier. I think it’s because once I have missed my GIR, I tell myself I don’t deserve the par anyway. But when I’m on a green in regulation, it’s much more shooting yourself in the foot to walk away with a bogey. 
 

that’s how it works in my head, at least. 
 

And as an 8-10 handicap, I do feel that 30 feet isn’t asking too much to lag it up within 3 feet. So when I don’t, I now feel extra pressure on that 5-7 footer to save the par. So in a sense I agree with your premise regarding being better at the 5-7 footers but for me personally it’s a chicken or the egg thing. I don’t lack confidence in those putts UNLESS it’s to avoid the three Jack. Where as for you the three Jack seems to be a direct result of your fear of having to make a 5-7 footer.

I just think its a losing mentality and similar to what I do with chips because I don't have high confidence in cleaning things up.  Refering back to my friend who acts like a +1 from around the greens, I tell him all the time I need to be more competitive from around the greens.  A missed green isn't just bogey.  A ho him chip to 6.5 ft and a missed putt to make bogey isn't just acceptable.   To him greenside is up and down.  If it isn't he is annoyed.  And thats why he is a 6 and im a 10.  People like you and me can't just be fine with bogey from a missed green.    We are ams we miss greens.  

To me they count all the same.  I need to get up and down a certain number of times in order to shoot a good score.  I feel like I need to convert up and downs, hit that chip to 5 feet and make it, in order to make up for the inevitable OB later in the round or the chunk.   But I too will concede bogey.  Where my friend who is better than I am never concedes and grinds thr whole round and ends up 5 shots better even tho we hit the ball pretty similarly. 

As for chicken or the egg I understand the idea there.  But it doesn't have to be that.  If you had something to track everything and improved your outside 30 feet lag from 4.5 feet to 3.5 feet from thr hole on average, you still have to make them.  I find a better option is getting more comfortable over anything inside 6 feet.   To where 3 feet or 5 feet it feels similar.  

This all said it totally depends on the courses you play.  My home course I would say has sort of smaller greens.  Less greens hit, more chipping, less lagging.   So yeah i get that lag putting is much more of an area of concern for those who play courses with giant greens.   I feel as ams we should probably putt the ball closer than we chip it.  But to me a 40 foot 2 putt is basically an up and down.  Just as much as a 25 foot green side chip from the rough.  Maybe not perfectly similar but similar enough.  You aren't always go to chip it to 4 feet and you arent always going to putt it to 3 feet.  I think key is becoming very good from close inside 6.

I was a fairly good golfer when I was young.   I hit it further now but haven't improved my handicap since i was 13 or 14.  I was a 10 or 11 handicap at 13 years old.   And I could chip and putt the lights out.   Much of what I miss from my game back then was being fearless on the greens.  I may take a 14 foot birdie putt up a hill 4 feet past because I wanted to make it and knew id make it coming back.   It was such a better recipe for going low.

Basically the same. I won junior events as a 10 year old and I had a better short game because I was fearless in hitting certain shots. 
 

Then again I am better now than I ever was as a high school or collegiate golfer because I went through a phase of high frustration and expectations and I didn’t hit the ball as far as I do off the tee now. Having a better mental approach combined with not feeling overpowered by the course and sometimes feeling that I can do the overpowering is why I enjoy myself more and can go out and shoot 75

I guess I should have clarified that a missed green does not just mean I’ve accepted bogey. I’m still going to try my hardest to get up and down for par… it’s more a feeling that since I should be hitting that green in regulation, I don’t deserve a par. Par is now a bonus. 
I don’t know how else to explain it but feeling like par is a bonus takes the pressure off that 5-6 footer. Versus hitting the GIR and making a poor lag putt, that 5-6 footer for par is no longer a bonus.

I said I am actually a good lag putter.  I just dont make near the thr number of putts I used to; when I wasn't scared about cleaning anything up.   

Some of my really great lag putts from fringe or otherwise get an ooo from the group.  Then they cringe as I miss the 3.5 footer.

Gotcha. I thought you had been sayin your lag putting suffers BECAUSE you know you have issues from that shorter range.

Fock that.  I play pro vs but always use my shop credit at end of year.  So each year I end up with 2 or 3 dozen of last years pro vs.   Im not opposed to playing any decent ball but have played pro vs for years and years.

While you're golfing with your bosses bosses boss, I will be landing in Madrid. Planning to play Santander Golf Club, supposedly a nice Rees Jones course. I wanted to play Valderrama where they had the 97 Ryder cup but it would take a full day to travel there, play and travel back to where I'm staying. Plus its outrageously expensive for non members

I have no problem drinking cheap beer or eating store brand macaroni and cheeses, but I am a golf ball snob. That said, I do carry a couple sleeves of Kirkland at all times in the event I am playing poorly on a given day. No need to be chucking $5 bills into ponds and hazards.

I switched to TP5 a few years ago but i'll play pro v or chrome soft if im gifted a box.  I don't go through a lot of balls though because I usually find a bunch on the courses I play if I just walk along the tree line or especially the tall grass on links style. Ones I don't like will be given to my friends who are newer to the game and don't care.  I'll find a lot of TP and Pro V and as long as they are not cut or badly scuffed, they go into my bag and I tend play those during regular rounds.  The new balls come out for outings, or any round where wagering is going on. 

Between the nice balls I find and the balls gifted to me for christmas and birthdays, I don't remember the last time I bought a box.

Unrelated: It’s to the point with drivers that it’s laughable how many new models come out and how quickly. I miss 15 years ago when new stuff came out at a slower pace. 
 

My father has 3 drivers. An xhot that he mostly uses but he’s been trying to replace it and can’t . Has an XR he hates, and I believe a Rogue. He usually keeps 2 drivers in the bag and will sometimes use one on the front and one on the back. It’s ridiculous. He was recently talking about trying an Epic. At least I can say he doesn’t just go for the latest “greatest”. He has also had an aero burner and Superfast 2.0.

I made a similar move. I had been hitting a Big Bertha Steelhead from the mid 2000s until 2021 when I got a Sim Max discounted as the Sim 2 was being released. I will probably bag this one for 10-15 years as well.

That's why Im always in the mindset that if I want something new, I'm going to get it.... within reason. I'll always look for deals, especially hitting the club at the course or regular retail shop and then purchasing on ebay... but i'm never going to be like "oh golf clubs are so expensive and I hit this one pretty good, i'll just stick with what I have"... then im dead. Of course you can't have this mindset with everything, but for your top hobbies, I don't see why not.

The shaft is the most important part of a driver............. Many forgiving models out there. Find you one that's appealing to your eye, get the right loft and if the shaft fits you, you will be good to go.

i've sadly played 4 times all year. Have not even renewed my local county card yet and skipped playing in Cape May the week before memorial day. 

A second friend of mine got a membership to the indoor facility we use. I don't see the point in getting one myself, especially since I now have two options to tag along with... so I feel like we have been doing way more trackman than real golf. We will hit it up from 6:30-10:30 to eat, drink and watch sports while we play or sometimes just for 2 hours to get numbers.

 

gotta get back out there. The most recent two rounds I played my driver was fantastic but my approach shots were complete dog shiit.

Got a round in yesterday, November golf for the win. Playing Sunday as well, love me some global warning.

Side note, finally replaced my 10 year old TM RSi irons with the new TM P790's. Highly recommend, what a stellar set of clubs. Of course, after 10 years of technology, I may think any set is stellar.

i've been considering the 790's for a while. 

got to play a few rounds last week when we had high 70s here.
