SCOTUS LGBTQ Ruling? No thread?

Seems really questionable to me that this woman’s original web content would not be a public accommodation / product or service.

Hers is a garbage argument. Leaving aside the fact that she had no standing… What would be the difference between designing a website for a gay couple vs a straight one? If you really were a wedding website designer doing a decent amount of business, you’d probably have a boilerplate, and then modify it a bit based on customer preferences, then load in the content they send you.

If the website goes against your personal beliefs and you have the courage of your convictions to refuse the money, that should be your right of refusal.

Will be interesting to see where it stops.  No gays allowed in restaurants next?  Chef's dishes are free speech?

true.

I watched an interview yesterday with a black man who was upset about the idea of “tell us about your hardships” in admissions essays, calling it even more offensive and discriminatory than AA. Why should a disadvantaged kid have to write some sob story instead of writing about their accomplishments and future plans? This ruling by the court was rubbish. Either end all race-based admissions or don’t. This half-assed crap of making disadvantaged students tell sad stories in their admissions essays is trash. And if this is REALLY about illegal discrimination, why do they have an exemption for military colleges? Need to make sure we have enough minorities to send into combat?

Listened to a podcast this weekend suggesting this is just a small step in a greater move to restrict civil rights even further, can't remember exactly why, not a lawyer.

I can imagine the designer saying the sites she writes and designs are entirely bespoke. I just don’t see how a site she’s been commissioned to write/design constitutes free speech vs. a good or service? That seems like a major stretch.

People are going to push this as far as they can get away with. How are lower courts supposed to interpret what is expression? What if I make pizza, and it offends my deeply held beliefs for straight people to eat it? Each pizza is a work of art because the pepperoni I toss on there never lands in exactly the same place twice.

What about a gay bar that wants a sign for their bar in a small town? Let’s say there’s only one sign-maker in town and they decide it offends their sensibilities to make a sign for them?

One could come up with countless examples that abuse this ruling.

How would a restauranture know that certain customers were ghey? Also, restaurants are some of the most difficult businesses to make profitable. I don't think they're going to refuse service to anybody who behaves in their establishment.

History tells us that many restaurants had zero problem refusing service to black people when it was legal.

I will not be surprised at the level of bigotry that we may see now that there is legal precedent.

Were I a business owner, I would accept any and all well behaved customers who chose to patronize my establishment.

If another business owner chooses to not accept somebody's money, based on their sexual preference or political beliefs, I'd think he/she was stupid but it's his/her right to be stupid at their own expense.

This ruling essentially overrules the CRA based on free speech.  So all you have to do is argue that your free speech is being violated and you can deny service all you want, according to this ruling.

Well yeah.  You can’t make someday say something they don’t want to.  Free speech is also the right not to express yourself.

JHC.  It's like taking candy from a baby when dealing with pedotrash.

It's not even fair anymore - I almost feel sorry for him.

I understand this woman didn’t even have a potential gay client and her lawsuit was entirely hypothetical. What a loser. I hope her imaginary business fails hard.

You don't sound like a bigot.  Unfortunately we have lots of bigots that own businesses.  I said it before my hope is that we've come far enough as a society and have enough good people in this country whereas these activist judges and bigots can't negatively affect the good people.

Correct, this was all BS, looking to take advantage of the activist conservative majority.  More to come.

Someone tell the idiot that wrote that story that it is not a majority Christian country.  Not anymore.  And it’s worse.

About 64% of Americans call themselves Christian today.

Do you ever tire of being wrong?

As a business owner, I think refusing service to a fraction of the population is just as dumb as concentrating on a fraction of the population

I respect the "gun free zone" signs at the establishments who post them. I don't patronize them. Whether I'm carrying or not at the time. You've shown me that you don't appreciate me or my business. That's fine, there's a place a block away who does.

So you think in order to be Christian you have to attend mass frequently?  Typical judgemental Catholic.

Uh, yeah.  Identifying means you were most likely raised Christian but don’t participate. I’m not giving that any credence.  Why would I?

Because that's what Jesus teaches.  You know, the guy who started it all.

Jesus didn't say anything about being in a pew every Sunday to be one of his followers.  You do.

Well, I think he wouldn’t accept “identifying” as being a member of the flock. He would still love them of course, but he might let them know that a bigger commitment is necessary.  He did speak of a church many times. I think he was hoping people show up.

And Jesus was also completely silent on the issue of homosexuality (apparently, he didn't feel it important enough to talk about).

I wonder where Jesus stood on wishing rape on kids and talking about them watching porn?

"Judge not, lest ye be judged."

He wasn't for or against it. He knew it wasn't up to him.

That's a common thing amongst self-proclaimed Christians. Many feel they're righteous in their beliefs. When, actually, God might disagree. I wouldn't include HT in that group. I don't think he is judgemental against an adult's chosen lifestyle. He just doesn't approve of forcing those choices on children before they have a chance to decide for themselves.

No sensible person should have a problem with that.

What choices being forced on children are we talking about here?
