I wouldn't rule out seeing dollar signs in the slightest. You said it's col to hobnob with star athletes. So they possibly thought he could be a star.... $$$. I doubt as a 16 year old, they were motivated by the simple thought of hanging out with a potential professional athlete. Would the wife be an author and motivational speaker if not for all this? was he actually adopted or not? If they never adopted him and simply had him sign paper making them conservators, It seems pretty suspect That’s the issue to me. As I understand they never did adopt him, and they’ve had inconsistent stories about why. They’ve said it’s because he was 18 but you could adopt an adult in their state so that doesn’t hold water (and they had lawyers who would know that). They’ve also claimed it was because of the ole miss booster thing but a conservatorship is probably worse than an adoption in that case. It doesn’t add up. My suspicion is they just didn’t want to make him legally part of the family such that he would assumedly inherit. Now they could’ve had wills and written him out, but that could also be challenged with much better basis if he was legally their son.

I do think they were also motivated to recruit him for Ole Miss where they were boosters. Although they said he couldn’t be adopted because he was 18 by that point, not sure but seems believable. I don't have a horse in the race. Seems like Oher pissed away a lot of his money and it also seems like the family made a decent amount of money off of him. Regardless of their own net worth. Having money in the first place doesn't stop greed. Oher will survive financially. And no, it does not seem the family made much at all. They signed away the rights of their names to the movie for somewhere around $500k, which all family members got a cut including Oher. That is about the market price for a movie before it goes into production and becomes a major hit. In hindsight, they should have gambled for a percent of box office. I am not just including the movie when I say they made money off of him. I read that the wife is an author and motivational speaker. Was this the case before their heartwarming story? I honestly don't know but my gut says no. They also run organizations that have benefitted greatly from their relationship to Oher. Again I am not defending Oher. I'm not saying he deserves anything. I guess what Im really saying is, it's possible for both parties to look bad in this situation.

Also interesting that that link mentions different numbers for what they made from the movie (albeit it wasn't a ton).
TimHauck 2,621 Posted September 12, 2023 Good summary: Mostly covers what was discussed here. Basically, they’re both lying. Tuohys lied about not being able to adopt him when he was 18. One new thing in here that I hadn’t seen is it is confirmed that they called Oher their adoptive son in marketing materials for their foundation. But Oher lied about how much money they made from the movie, assuming he was referring to directly from the movie.
IGotWorms 4,057 Posted November 11, 2023 CNN — Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy say they paid Michael Oher more than $138,000 of proceeds from the blockbuster film and preceding book “The Blind Side,” despite the former NFL player’s claim that the couple never paid him his share of the profits, court documents say. Oher, whose life story was depicted in the Oscar-winning movie, filed a petition in August claiming the Tuohys told him they were going to adopt him, but instead filed a conservatorship that kept millions of dollars from him, including his share of the film proceeds. The Tuohys strongly denied Oher’s claims they were enriching themselves at his expense, saying they have always acted in his best interest. A Tennessee judge terminated the Tuohy’s conservatorship over Oher in September, but several issues in his petition remained unresolved, including a request that the Tuohys provide a sworn account of the money that should have been paid to Oher. The Tuohys filed the financial statement in Shelby County, Tennessee, probate court on Wednesday, laying out a series of 10 payments totaling $138,311.01 made to Oher – and later his son – between 2007 and April of this year. According to the Tuohy’s attorney, Randy Fishman, the couple began putting Oher’s payments in his son’s name after Oher began returning checks to the Tuohys. Fishman did not elaborate on the reason for the allegedly returned checks.
Mike Honcho 5,098 Posted November 16, 2023 The new film ‘Blindsided’ challenges the blockbuster’s take on the life of ex-NFL star Michael Oher A new CNN documentary releasing on Thursday sheds light on the strained, complex relationship between former NFL player Michael Oher and the Tuohy family. Oher’s life and his time living with Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, a wealthy White family from Memphis, Tennessee, was the subject of a book and the 2009 blockbuster, “The Blind Side.” The Oscar-winning movie charts the former offensive lineman’s rise from homelessness and poverty to becoming a star football player at college and in the NFL with the help of the Tuohy family. But “Blindsided” paints a different picture of Oher’s upbringing, challenging the film’s depiction of him as unsophisticated, uneducated and solely reliant on the family’s support for his success. Michael Oher was paid $138,000 from ‘The Blind Side’ movie and book, Touhy family says in court filing “It’s kind of embarrassing, and I’m embarrassed for him as a friend,” Quinterio Franklin, one of the Super Bowl winner’s former classmates, says in the CNN documentary after watching a scene from the movie in which Oher submits a test without answering any of the questions, instead drawing a stick figure on a boat. “It’s not accurate and it’s hurtful.”
RLLD 4,143 Posted December 5, 2023 Michael Oher texts show alleged Tuohy family shakedown: ‘Think how it will look’ Quote The new court filings are not the first time that the Tuohy’s legal representatives have painted Oher to be someone who has tried to extort money from the family. “Following the announcement of Oher’s bombshell lawsuit in August, attorney Marty Singer told TMZ of Oher’s alleged attempt to get $15 million out of the family.” “Even recently, when Mr. Oher started to threaten them about what he would do unless they paid him an eight-figure windfall, and, as part of that shakedown effort refused to cash the small profit checks from the Tuohys, they still deposited Mr. Oher’s equal share into a trust account they set up for his son,” Singer said.
