Mike Honcho 5,269 Posted April 25, 2024 So I have one of these things from the insurance company. Supposedly gives a discount the safer I drive. Rates my driving for each trip, acceleration, braking, how fast I take turns, speeding. Pretty much across the board, I get 1 or 2 stars, cause I drive way too fast. So my question to you guys, considering I have NEVER been in a single accident, shouldn't that be more impressive. Shouldn't I get a bigger discount, because clearly I'm a gifted driver if I'm driving like a bat out of hell with ZERO accidents. Seriously, I'm going around curves on 2 wheels, not one single scratch on any car I've ever owned.
edjr 6,580 Posted April 25, 2024 Us non poor people already have that as part of the app for our car.
Strike 5,532 Posted April 25, 2024 1) Your discount for being a good driver is baked in to the base rate they quoted you. They know if you have tickets/accidents/etc.... 2) Those apps are crap. GM just got sued for taking the type of data you described that their cars were tracking and selling it directly to the insurance industry. The problem with those apps is they don't have context. Let's say I slam on my brakes to avoid running in to the person in front of me who slammed on their brakes. They could penalize me for that when in actuality I just avoided an accident. I would never voluntarily allow that type of data to be tracked for my vehicles. 1

I was being facetious but of all the geeks I expected more from you...look at the two cars in your profile pic, you know what I'm talking about! Some of us should get Awesome Driver Bonus points. Also, I'm going to have to look up that GM case later, sounds like they got a well deserved spanking. Thanks for that info.

Like apparently they track when you “accelerate too quickly.” Well I don’t know about you guys, but if you live somewhere that you’re regularly merging on to interstates and multi lane highways, that’s just a fact of life.

Fnord 2,259 Posted April 25, 2024 Fock those apps. Just bundle everything, including homeowners insurance, and avoid accidents or tickets to keep rates low. Those of us that know how to use our white, middle age privilege don't worry about crap like this. We drive however we want and when we get pulled over for something dumb like rolling through a stop sign the cops will basically apologize for being idiots. Youse guys is doin this all wrong.

Totally infuriating...anyone reading this thread, if you have access to the times, it's a very good and quick read.
