Dontayvian Wicks

Recommended Posts

Hey I was talking to a buddy of mine who is a Green Bay homer.

I know this guy was not well regarded coming out of college, but it is interesting looking at some of the analyitics on this guy:

Passer rating when targeted for Packers WRs:

  • Jayden Reed 123.1
  • Dontayvion Wicks 117.6
  • Bo Melton 114.0
  • Romeo Doubs 100.4
  • Malik Heath 89.8
  • Christian Watson 71.4
  • Samori Toure 34.0

in addition to this Wicks actually leads the league in getting open against single coverage.   granted this was his rookie season so the sample size was small.   the # of snaps he got in the first half of the season was rather small, but he played a decent amount in the second half.    enough for us to determine his workload is likely gonna go up next year.

does anyone here want to weigh in on this?  I dont think anyone is talking about him.    I am not recommending you draft him high in your draft, but very late he could be a nice lotto ticket

There's nothing not to love about Wicks. He's only 22, perfect profile that meets production, etc. He's already spoken for in all my Dynasty Leagues. I tried 😞

Christian Watson is about to be out of a job, perhaps early as this weekend.

It's a crowded WR room. Right now, with Wicks, he's not even a starter IMO.

He'd be the one to go.

hes on a rookie contract.   As such there is no huge incentive for the team to trade him.

if Green Bay doesnt think he starts, they may look around for a trading partner to try to get an asset in return for him.    But this is generally a bad move for the GM's job security.   if they trade him or dump him, and he goes on to light it up for another team, that could put the GMs job in jeopardy.   it is more likely they keep him on the roster for at least one more year. (unless someone pays a decent price for him)

the way I figure, the contract is affordable and if a team doesnt give something decent, they are more likely to bury him on the roster. at his salary, there is no urgency to get rid of him.

I'm sorry, I meant Watson may not be the starter. Wicks has certainly earned a larger role

I had my questions about Watson, but hes also been injured for a good part of the year.

Sometimes injuries can prevent a player from finding his groove (so to speak)  so I wouldnt go writing him off just yet.    but I do think Wicks has earned more reps.

to what extent I cannot be sure, but he didnt get any significant work until the midpoint of the season and he finished with 581 yards as a rookie.   pro rate those last 9 games  hes close to 700 yards if you double that total to pro rate over 18 games.

while thats not massive, its pretty good for a rookie.   and most WR do better in year 2.  I'd project him for around 800 yards and 6 or 7 TD.     And this is probably a conservative estimate with a low floor and high ceiling due to the small sample size.

UVa is my college team (where Wicks played) as he was absolute beast in 2021.

We hired a new coach in 2022, brought in a new staff, and it impacted Wicks more than anyone.  New offensive system, too many drops, and then with a couple of games left in the season 3 teammates got gunned down in a mass shooting.

Kid can play.  I’d put him right there with Reed (ahead of Watson) at the top of the GB WR group.

well, we will see if the pro scouting agrees with your opinion soon enough.

well, it looks like its time to hop on the train.

5 catches 78 yards and 2 TD for Wicks.    lots of targets and some missed throws on Loves part.

now that Watson is out a few games, this is his chance to make an impact.   if hes gonna step up and be a player, the time is NOW.

I recommend you get him while the price is good. (hes on the wire in most leagues so cost is free or a handful of FAAB dollars)

I drafted him in my draft as a direct back up to Watson.

When Watson leaves the field it is Wicks that comes on.

Doubs and Reed pretty much stay on the field and Watson and Wicks rotate.

Melton usually comes in when Doubs need a breather.

I drafted him in both my leagues.  As a GB fan I have been on him all offseason.

He has dropped way too many balls this year.  But once he cleans that up he is good to go.  He gets open consistently and is good after catch.

Just how good Reed has been may damper what I thought he may have been able to do this year.  But none the less, he is already involved and Watson down yet again only opens tthe hr door wider.

For you dynasty leaguers...go get him.

Any opinion?... here's my bench for a 10 team ppr superflex. I also have Love and Kraft (I dropped Engram) as starters:

Geno, Darnold, D. Smith, J. Wright, Downs, Mattison, Legette, Allgeier (I have Bijan) with Kupp and Brooks on IR.  I'm also considering Gibson RB NE as he may become the starter.  I could drop Allgeir and Wright and get both Gibson and Wicks.  I have sent out some trade offers for Kupp as well.

Wright for Gibson, better hurry,  unless you can trade Kupp, I would let him go for Wicks.  I don’t think Kupp will stay healthy after his return.  I would try to keep Allgeir.  Imo.  But if you can trade Kupp congrats.

I noticed C. Brown (Bengals) is also on the waiver wire with Gibson. You like Gibson more?

Dropping Kupp doesn't free up a spot because he's on IR. So the way I see it currently, I could drop J. Wright and/or Allgeier for Wicks and C.Brown. Bijan hasn't done much in the last two games.  I'm thinking Wicks for Wright is the best option since Tua could be out a while. If Tua wasn't hurt, I might hold in to Wright with their offense potential otherwise.

Thoughts?

Since you have the IR slot, he’s worth stashing, but I would still shop, and see what kind of a return, not so sure once Kupp returns if you will quickly be out again.   Wright for Wicks is a very good ideal.

Agreed on both stashing and shopping Kupp.  Thank you for your time and opinions. Enjoy the day.  Cheers

yeah, with Kupp being on IR there is no need to rush to do something there.  but you may need to make a decision once he is back.

though from my perspective, when hes healthy hes been good.   so why not wait for his return?  its when hes injured and Not on IR that that roster spot hurts you because its a dead spot on your roster.

Correct... if he comes back. Thanks for your thoughts Ray.

That's the $1,000,000 question right? Just because he gets activated, assuming he does, will he be "healthy" or perhaps only a decoy?

Cheers
