It's ok to see what you see. Hammers have handles. Did you see a handle sticking out from the bottom if either hand? I didn’t.

I saw something shiny in his right hand. I thought it was a knife at first but there's no mention of a knife.

It’s okay to see what you see.  I’ll lean towards believing the witnesses and law enforcement that have the encounter on video and surely recovered whatever he was holding after they killed his azz.

I actually think the hammer was in his left hand.  After the trooper pushes him and the guy touches himself in the chest, it looks like the head of a hammer to me.  Could’ve been one with a small handle.

I put Unarmed in quotes for a reason. Therefore the thread title is not incorrect. Dude clearly had something in his hands. It wasn't a gun, it wasn't a hammer, but he was absolutely holding something.

Why are you so confident it wasn’t a hammer? I just told you where to look in the video that it looks like a hammer to me.  If it is confirmed to be a hammer, would you concede that makes it a weapon? 

If the dead guy was black and the incident was on video, then I think it would be described in the same way.  Especially since there is also video of his previous attack on the construction workers. Sure if there was no video then his mom would probably claim it was a Bible or something.

Because I own and have used hammers. They all pretty much have a 10" - 12" handle. Even my little ball peen hammer has a 10" handle.

So, at best, he had the head of a hammer in one hand or the other. Which can absolutely be deadly if you get repeatedly punched in the head with it. But not nearly as deadly as if it still had the handle attached, which it didn't. 

The cop could've just shot him in the leg. He didn't have to kill the guy for holding a hammer head.
