Mike Honcho 5,287 Posted June 5, 2024 Justin Jefferson signed a 4-year, $140 million contract extension with $110 million guaranteed - 35 million per year over four years The San Francisco 49ers rewarded All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey with a contract extension after he won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award in his first full season with the team. A person familiar with the deal said it's worth $19 million per year over two years
Strike 5,565 Posted June 5, 2024 Couldn't you make the same comparison between WR's and QB's? I guess the message here is if your kid isn't an elite QB he should just quit football because 19 Mil is worthless.
WhiteWonder 2,750 Posted June 5, 2024 I mean logically, if your kid is dead set on playing football and talented enough to make the NFL one day, you should be encouraging him to play WR because they make more and their careers are typically longer with less wear and tear on the body. As far as WR vs QB, the elite QB's make more but there are less QB jobs to go around. How much does a valued WR3 make compared to a decent backup QB? better for them to be a star basketball or baseball player though

WhiteWonder 2,750 Posted June 5, 2024 11 minutes ago, edjr said: That tells you all you need to know. yes and no. WR's are personalities who help drive interest in the team and sell tickets and merch. Again, their careers are longer and a team can hitch their wagon to a WR as a face of the franchise. But yes, I agree that in terms of winning super bowls, it really boils down to QB, Offensive Line and Pass Rushers. The Chiefs were able to let Hill go because when you have Mahomes, protection for him, a good scheme, and players like Jones on defense... you can win titles without a stud receiver (ignoring Kelce in this example). I look at my own Jets and their 2022 draft class. Big hits on Sauce, Wilson, Breece and Jermaine Johnson and I think Johnson may wind up proving to be the most crucial one to keep long term. Most QB's do need weapons though so Wilson would slot in 2nd. Sauce would be 3rd because as good as he is, shutdown corners don't play at that level for very long. Breece might be the most fun to watch of the 4 but ... RB.

I was more leaning into the skill position players that aren't QB's, since they are a crazy outlier on the pay scale in nearly all capped sports in term sof percentage of salary spent on position. Jefferson(all runs + passes thrown to him) is targeted 9.6 times a game for 98.7 yards per game. McCaffrey 21 targets, 115 yards per game. Like WW said, terms of punishment, career length, it's pretty crazy IMO, that Jeffereson is worth almost 2X yearly. As they both just set new high water marks, I thought it was an interesting comparison.

Today, if Jefferson says "Thanks, I'm done", he walks away with $110M.

Go figure QB's rarely do either. Saw something the other day, that the highest percentage of a teams salary that was paid to a SB was Mahomes at 17.2%. Before that 12.6 for Brady when he was in TB(and they had a pretty flexible cap). I've always said many times that Brady's willingness to slot into a reasonable contract(despite always ranking in the top 3 QBs every year) is one of the biggest reasons the Pats were able to consistently win for all those years. I think there will be a QB pay correction, coming soon.

Quote Kirk Cousins signed a 4 year , $180,000,000 contract with the Atlanta Falcons, including $50,000,000 signing bonus, $100,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $45,000,000. There was a time RB's were the focus of the offense and got paid accordingly. The NFL has changed the rules to make it a passing game and that has altered the salaries of RB's (lower) and WR (higher). It's unfortunate if you're a RB but for most players the position they play is determined by body makeup as well as skills. Some people are never going to be a WR but make a great O lineman. Anyone on the team still makes great money compared to what they'd be making if they weren't in the NFL so they should probably just be happy to be there. It's hard to compare the two in terms of what type of players you should pay to win versus which players might be worth the investment from a pure business standpoint. I think there is something to be said for the fact we dont see NFL players faces on the field so when you get a charismatic star (like a Justin Jefferson), he sells tickets and merchandise. I don't know anything about Devers. Is he charismatic? Does baseball even allow him to be if he were? Is he playing like a superstar? Quick look at his numbers this year says hes an all-star level guy not a superstar Ohtani, Soto, Judge, etc.

I would also add that in addition to league rule changes, that teams began to realize that RB tandems, or committee's are just as good if not better than one stud especially given the injury prone nature of the position. Fresh legs often triumphs and you can ditch a guy after his rookie deal and move on to the next set of cheap fresh legs. The money is better spent on QB, offensive tackles and guys who can last 10+ years. I'm not sure that would revert even if the NFL started shifting to rules that favored the RB position.
