That's fascinating, thanks for posting.  Escaping earth's gravity is arguably the largest impediment to space travel -- 95% of the payload is required for fuel to do so.  

A lot of thought has gone into the possibility of a "space elevator" to overcome this problem as well.

Same.  Also, it's not conducive for live things like humans, since it probably goes 90273148932 G's or something as it winds up.  But maybe we can send up people via conventional methods and fling up all of the equipment to start an outpost/colony.

I've yet to hear back on flying a big rope up to the ISS and them tying it off and throwing it back to Erf. 

'Course, they'd have to have some pretty strong Rusky Astronauts. ‍‍
