Screen or ad lib?

Recommended Posts

I keep seeing people refer to this pass as an example of some awesome ad lib from Caleb Williams, and I've heard analysts specifically say it was not a screen.

But isn't this clearly a screen?  The two guards clearly release their blocks and start blocking down field.

Part of the reason I ask is this play is being cited as a reason Caleb is awesome, but Bo Nix is boring and a chump for putting it up 20 points in a half dumping the ball off and going 15 for 21.

I suspect its just a case where they are trying to create excitement and hype.    the content wont come up for me so I cant see specifically what you are talking about but I'm pretty sure its just the announcers hypiing the rookies.  nothing more.   when people get excited or hyped up they watch more pre season games and the ratings go up.

you have eyes, you know what you saw.   maybe its not a bad play but I doubt its as awesome as what the announcers say.

dont get me wrong, I like Caleb.   hes likely gonna be a good pro for a long time  but this is pre season and not a lot you see actually counts for anything until the regular season arrives.

NFL doesn't let you see the embedded video.  You have to open the link in YouTube.

It looks like an improvised play, he knew the RB would be there so he tried to get rid of it in his direction to avoid the sack. Pretty common move for a QB.

It was a good play, but I don't think it was anything spectacular.

It was a good play. But his other passes were what wowed people. Two passes were flat out dropped and both kmet and Moore came out and owned up to it. They had no choice but to, as it was all on film. He should have been 6 of 7.

DJ freaking Moore and Keenan Allen were quoted as saying that Williams has been amazing and I'll take their word over some of the guys on this site.

Here he is practicing damn near the same thing.  He's setting up like a drop back to sell the screen.

No ad lib.  Designed play.  Final ruling.

So it was his first and/or his only read on the play? Because Williams showing that kind of patience and manipulation of the pocket makes it even better if so.

Still a good play, Caleb fans.  I just object to the mischaracterization as some sort of Aaron Rodgers crossed with Mahomes improvisation.

Dude executed a screen.  He sold it well.  He did have to improvise the throw to get it there because the defenders got there quickly, but we don't need to force the praise like he made some miracle happen.

None of us know if it was a screen or not. So all you are doing is guessing just like the others out there guessing. It wasn't even his best play of the game.

Nix is going to struggle in the NFL.  I watched a lot of Auburn football, and he struggled against those defenses.  He looked great against those weak defenses in the PAC.  Georgia made him look horrible in his first game at Oregon.  Buyers be ware.

"Buyers beware"? He's going as a QB 29 with an ADP of like 215. He's drafted as about as long shot as you get.

most plays (especially for young QB) have an outlet (or checkdown) embedded somewhere so if he gets in trouble he can dump it off and get 1-5 yards.    so he should know where his checkdown is.

though I think this was a designed play.  I'm not gonna rave about it all day, but its still a good play.

Yes, it was a good play, he made the right reaction, at lightening speed, which is a good sign. That's not really out of the ordinary for an NFL QB though.

Nix will be the steal of the draft.

I am in agreement with you here.

When asked if it was a no look pass Williams said, "I wish it was but it wasn't. Swift wears orange colored gloves and that's what I saw, his gloves, so I threw it there."
