Love both of those but of the huge battle episodes I think my favorite is the one when the Wildlings attack the Nights Watch and Ygritte dies in Jon’s arms. That was just an awesome battle from start to finish.

I'm probably in the minority of being one who read the books first; we were lucky to discover them early.  Some scenes, like this one, were done really well in the books.  I think Oberyn's fight with the Mountain was another one.

Speaking of the books vs. TV, I'm not sure how much it came out on the screen, but Gregor was IMO the best character in the books.  I know Tyrion would be a popular choice, but in the end he was basically a good guy.  Gregor was the perfect Martin character -- so good, yet so bad.  

The Hound was my favorite character in the show.

I liked when we were fist introduced to poppa Lannister (Charles Dance) w he. He was gutting that deer and lecturing Jamie. Ned losing his head was pretty wild too.
